pikeys !! Brad Pitt nailed that role perfectly.

"Big Fish": family favorite around here. Something about a story about a dad
that seems to be full of balogna that kind of strikes a cord.

"Apollo 13": pure DTS enjoyment ,too. Any movie that has slipsticks in it has
    to be good.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off": what a classic. Ohhh, yeah.

"Monsters Ball": 2 words. Halle Berry. Make that 3 words. Throw in yummy.

"The Shawshank Redemption": a Stephen King work brought perfectly to screen.

A few stinkers in your list:
    -Ladder 49
    -A Knight's Tale
    -U-571

If I may ask, what is this:
"Tofu 123 : Taking the Mystery Out of the Big White Blob Hosted By
Maribeth Abrams and Featuring Carl Lewis" ?

Where did this bar code reader come from?
Does it just read the code and give you all the info?

That sounds like a pretty cool tool.

I agree that it's a pretty cool tool, but I really question what the point of making a thread listing every DVD you own was. Unless they're for sale... seriously. Why?
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

It is just for conversational purposes I would guess but I still have questions about this scanner.

Does it just know what all bar codes are for?
I always wondered about this. Does each product in the world have it's own unique bar-code?

Call me a tard but I just don't know.

No Underworld on that list? For shame.
LOTR trilogy would be a nice addition too.*
    All give 5.1 a workout.

The simple answer is yes. Currently, systems utilize an 11 digit UPC (trailing digit doesn't "read" if you will), but there is a process in the works to expand from the current 11 to a 13 digit UPC. If you notice on products that you buy from the same manufacturer (say several cereal's from General Mills), they have the same leading group of numbers. Not every company has their own code prefix, but there are many out there that do.

We're getting to the point where we have too many products out there and that's why you're going to be seeing more of the 13 digit UPC's (instead of a leading digit then 2 sets of 5 digits, you're going to see a leading digit then 2 sets of 6 digits).

it made my life much easier.. before I didn't have the DVD's alphabatized.. now it's much easier to find that one I want.

YOu can organize your DVD's once they are scanned and into the computer and compared to the database.. by year, genre, title, etc. makes it so much easier.

    * a friend has about a dozen of my movies.. so the list in incomplete right now.. Riddick, and a few others are missing. Underworld being one of them. ha ha ha. It also does not include the box set of James Bond movies.. there was no bar code on the box set that I could find.

Interesting. I always wondered why people buy DVDs, especially in amounts like that? I am not judging, I really don't get it

How much one pays for a DVD? With all discounts and promotions $6 (Walmart rejects bin, 2 years after movie is out). Or rent it for $5 the day it is out.

Are those really the movies you will watch more than once?

My family and I have over 500 movies (400 ± DVDs and 100 ± VHS). Only about 250 are mine and the rest belong to my daughters. I can watch what I want....when I want. And yes...if it is good enough for me to buy...it's good enough to watch more than once. I don't go to the theater to watch movies. If we did it would be $32 + overpriced food for ONE movie for the family. I can pick up 4 or 5 DVDs (or more) for that price. I hate fooling with rentals and NEVER go to a video store. We have NetFlix for those movies we want to see but not buy.

I also like to buy my movies. My wife and I buy movies whenever we see anything that looks like it is worth watching.
I buy most from blockbusters pre-viewed and get 3 for $25.00. With tax it is just under $10.00 each. Way below the cost of 2 people for a movie.

Then we can watch it again if we want or just add it to the growing collection.

Renting is just plain too inconvient.

Currently we have around 30 movies we have not watched yet and half of them are movies the whole family can enjoy together on movie nights.

I also loan them out to my neighbor or my family so they don't have to but them.

For the money I spend on movies I think they end up being a good deal.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but has anyone out there considered a sort of
"Round Robin" type club where they work? There's about 25 people in ours, and basically we exchange DVDs all the time. No fees, rentals, etc. One person buys a movie every week, and we just kind of share what we have.
With 25 people, each person only has to buy 2 DVDs a year. I don't know about anyone else, but I was buying 2 DVDs a month for a while, so...
Yeah, you have to keep track of who has what, but in the end your "library"
will have grown nicely. Just a thought.
Another option I have where I live is to check DVDs out of your public library, if they have them. Currently ours has about 900 titles available, and they're always adding more. We can check out up to 6 at a time for up to one week.
Beats the Hell outta BBuster! It's a great way to preview movies you may be on the fence about renting. It doesn't cost a thing, and if you don't like the movie, so what? The only downside is you're pretty much SOL if the one you want is out, but it's an acceptable trade-off IMO.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?
