My house may flood

Not real happy right now but thought I would let you know I may not be around for awhile.
The leeve behind my home has been breached in a couple of places and right now the water is rising at a rate of +1" per hour.
My neighbor and I went out yesterday and saw one of the breaches up close, kinda spooky.
I don't want to be on the news or to have to replace everything below a certain level.
We just got flood insurance a couple of months ago so at least we have that.
Right now the water is behind my house and I have never seen it there; it has another 7' in elevation to go and is only about 10' from my back fence.

THIS TOTALLY SUCKS.

Today I have to start packing things for my wife and kids to go to a hotel if necessary and I will probably need to take time off at work to stay home and guard my house. We don't really live in the nicest neighborhood and I would expect things to get ugly if manditory evacuation is called for.

Did I mention THIS TOTALLY SUCKS.

Tonight at some point I have to put all my Polks onto the pool table and be left with only the boom box for listening. I don't think the toshiba is worth a broken back so it will just need to be replaced.
It sucks to look around at your stuff and think about what to chance and what to guard.

We are above the FEMA flood line for our area but in 1999 or 98 it flooded up to the back fence. I found this out after I moved in in 2000 but since it didn't actually flood the house it was not necessary to disclose this to us.

So now we wait.
And pack stuff we want to elevate.
And figure out what to do with our dogs. I don't really want the dogs to be all wet and jumping from furniture to furniture trying to stay out of the water. the furniture will probably have stuff on it trying to stay dry.

THIS TOTALLY SUCKS.

Sorry for the long rant but I just want to vent.
I will check in if I can hang onto power and internet.

And of course there is always the chance that the water will not reach us and all will be good.

If not THIS TOTALLY SUCKS.

Thanks for your time and hopefully good thoughts.

Having some good thoughts for you, your home, and loved ones. It sucks big time, but the fact that you have time to prepare is a nice bonus.

Hang in there maybe you'll get lucky and it will stop at your doorstep. I was in a flood 2 times when I was about 5-6 years old. I remember my Dad staying in the house not only to watch the water but to protect the valueables. We lived next to river that would flood about 1 every 10 years, but it flooded 2 in 3 years. My Grandparents lived down the street about a mile and were considereably higher so we stayed with them. It certainly isn't fun especially the aftermath of cleaning.

Best of luck. Get your family, pets, and important documents out of the house. Everything else is just stuff and stuff can be replaced. You've done what you could.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

    now for an update.

Right now it is still looking like it is 7 to 8 feet below the height of my back fence. Aparently this area is supposed to fill up like this when the river gets too high.
My neighbors up the street were here last time in 1997 and say the water never got closer that 10' from their back fence and no one in our area had water damage.
    So thats cool.
We can see one of the places the water is comming from and it comes through a pipe into the area behind our homes. This area is planned into the waterways behind my home.
Behind my home is a wildlife bird sanctuary which is managed by the feds. The feds were in charge of the land where we saw the levee break but that water just filled an adjacent orchard and appears to be contained.
If the area behind my house exceeds its capacity then it starts to encroach onto acres of orchards. I think it would take a lot of rain to bring it up far enough to get to my door.
I am feeling pretty good right now but the weather speculators ssay it is going to rain all week so that sucks. If it rains to the south then we may have problems but if it goes to the north I think we will be alright.
The highway my wife takes home from work is flooded and shut down so she needs to find a new way home.
If nothing else it has got the neighbors out and talking to each other, we followed another family around to all the closest water areas to check them out. There are 3 places right behind our devolopment where we can walk down to the water and one of the houses here has water in their back yard but their backyard is long and drops way down in the back.

I am sure we will be fine but that really depends on the rain next week.

Again thanks for the thoughts and for reading.

    Thanks Ron.

It only went up 4-5 inches over the last 12 hours so it really looks like it all depends on the rain.

    Thanks Demi.

While I was at work yesterday the water only rose 2 inches or so and another 1/2 inch over last night.
We think the level behind us is almost the same as the river so now the river would have to raise another 7 feet before I have trouble.
They delivered sand and bags to my town yesterday and dumped it right in front of my house.
The kids wanted to fill bags so we made about 20 or 30 but we don't have enough to do much.
The sand they delivered is actually a nice fine dirt so whatever we end up with will make nice fill for the garden when we are done.

It also did not rain much yesterday or last night. I guess it is still too soon but I think we will be fine.

We are keeping a positive attitude.
