sub level???

i'm not sure what lvl i should have my sub set at. i have it to where i think it sounds good but i'm not to good at the fine tuning. i have my fronts (rti 12s) center (csi5) and rears fxi5) set at 100hz. i then have my sub ( infinity sw-12) set at 80hz. Is this "good". i mean it sounds good but would some other setting sound "better"???

If you have your speakers set (in the AVR) to crossover at 100 hz, it will try and crossover to your sub at that point as well.

Assuming your sub is hooked up to the LFE output on your avr, you should turn the sub crossover off (if you can) or all the way up (hopefully way above 100 hz) if you cant disable it.

Try it and see if you like the sound better.

In your present set-up it is possible you are creating a hole between 80 and 100 Hz by having the receiver cut your speakers off at 100Hz, but cutting your sub off above 80Hz.
As Michael states, either disable the sub crossover, or turn it over 100Hz. Or if possible change your receiver crossover to 80Hz to match the sub if the receiver has that as a selection.

thanks. one more question because i think i might not under stand the hz lvl settings. as i have it set at 80hz does that mean that it allows the sub to go down to that lvl or does that mean it is allowing the sub to go from its lowest lvl up to 80hz? then missing that gap from 80 to 100 hz as stated above.

from the 80hz down, the subwoofer takes care of it... from 80hz up, the rest of the speakers take of that.

With the sub crossover it means it is allowing everything below the setting (80Hz) to the sub. It is filtering signals above 80Hz out.
On the receiver, with the crossover set at 100Hz it is allowing everything above 100Hz to the speakers, everything below 100Hz to the sub.
Thus the potential "hole" between 80 and 100Hz.

    Nice sub.
Where you set your volume is personal preference. If using for music you want it to enhance, not dominate the music. For home theater, you generally want it a little louder, so it hits you in the chest with high impact scenes. Experiment with what sounds good to you.
Some receivers have an auto set up to adjust the level. You can also get an spl meter to set the leves if you are looking for a more critical analysis, but generally you can set a sub output up my ear and what you like.

So is it common to tweak the volume if you're using the system for both purposes or do most people set the volume and leave it alone?

Also, I noticed the crossovers are set at 40 HZ for the front and rear speakers, and the sub is set at 100. I think these are default settings. How should I tweak them until I use a SPL meter? FYI-I have no center channel yet and use some Kenwood from a small bookshelf system for the rears at the moment (they sit on the floor beside the couch).

It is common to tweak your sub from audio to home theater use. Sometimes even from movie to movie, or different musical artists. That's why it's got a volume knob :) Some people prefer to turn the sub off completely when listening to 2 channel audio.
As to the crossover, again personal preference. Your RTi8's can just get down to 40Hz at their 3 db point. So you could leave the front crossover there if you want the RTi's to handle the bass that low, or you could move it up to give more of the low bass duty to the sub. Try different settings and see what you like.
As to the Kenwood bookshelf speakers, I doubt they are getting down to 40Hz, and you may want to cross the rear over at 80Hz if that is a choice.
Spend some time experimenting and see what sound you like.

    Hi experts,

I'm currenty connecting my PSW505 (LFE) to my Denon AVR 4306 (sw). The default crossover setting on the receiver is 80hz.
What is the correct frequency setting for the PSW505? Do I need to change the default crossover setting on the receiver.

    Thanks in advance,

    ~AAT

    Hi expert,

I have a PSW505 (lfe) connecting to a Denon AVR 4306 (sw). I've tested both; when I selected LFE, the sub is off for the main speakers in stereo mode and the sub is on in the 5.1-chanel mode; when I selected LFE+Main, the sub is on for both.

What is the prefer setting on the receiver (LFE or LFE+Main)?

    Thanks in advance,
    ~AAT

depends on how it sounds in your room, some people like double bass, some don't.. and besides, wouldnt let the load OFF your mains be better for it to produce the mids? and also would make ur receiver run cooler... just let the sub do the bass work :)
