Don't go cheap.Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.

That is good advice but not always an option for some of us paycheck-challenged people. And 450 for a 12" velo is decent, not like getting the 100 buck SONY or KLH special at Fry's. Sure you could be better off with more but it depends what you need it for.
To answer your question though, I had the DLS-5000R, the 15" model, and got it for 799. I took it back because it was really kinda overkill for my room, but it was nice. Smooth distortion free bass. Im sure that the 12" is of the same quality. I was pleased with the instore demos of the 12" too. Get it from somewhere with a good return policy and you can test it out for yourself though.-Stopher

Here's a review from a guy who got a great deal (one day Xmas special). He did a thorough job. I think it's a feature rich sub that's very good from 30hz up. For the money, I'd lean toward a PB10 for the added extention.

I listened to the DPS12, sounded great in Circuit City and The Incredibles

I agree the SVS PB10 probably has more bang for the buck. You can pick up a B stock for $389 plus shipping. B stock just means the unit was returned. If necesary SVS refurbished it, and it sells with original warranty.

When I lived in a house, I had my dps-10 hooked up right next to my front speaker and it sounded awesome, never had the problem of not feeling the bass (like the guy in that review stated), but when I moved to an apartment, the sub sounds like crap now. The placement of the sub means everything... but for the money(got it for $170, free shipping) it is great sub for my entry level system. The volume control on the dps however is absolutely terrible, you might want to check out those svs(which are widely praised on this forum) subs for that reason alone.AVR: H/K AVR240

If you want that sub, it may come cheaper at times. Velodyne subs are good entry level subs from my understanding, and I have seen some sales on that at Fry's. Wait on it unless you're in a hurry.

Uh, while Velodyne is not in the same class as SVS or HSU subs, I would not call it entry level. It is a very solid product, and some of their higher end units are downright impressive. For the money of the high end units though you can usually find a superior SVS.
I would place Velodyne directly below the upper class subs in a solid mid to mid-upper level category depending on the model. The Family

My pb-10 does a great job in my mid-sized room with my modest system. For $429 + shipp., I can't believe how much very deep, quality bass it produces. Unless you have a very large room, you can't go wrong with the pb-10.bms

how large is to be consider very large?

The SVS PB10 will dig deeper than the Velodyne DPS12. One thing I don't like about the DPS series is the volume controls. How fast the blue light blinks when you adjust it, is how you are supposed to figure out where its set at. The processing modes on the sub are a waste IMO.

The high-end Velos don't live in the same space as SVS or Hsu, they sell to a different market with different criteria. That being said, I ran with a DD15 for about a month. It's one of the best subs I've ever heard. A different sound than my SVS, flat and no distortion, superior for music, very powerful.
I'm trying to figure a way to acquire one to run along side my SVS.

Ron from SVS thought that my room size/configuration might be too much for the pb10, but it's doing a great job.
By the way, have any of you heard/saw King Kong yet? The audio is VERY dynamic. The walls were shakin' last night. All I need now is a 50" plasma...oh well, someday.bms
