I'm writing a paper on "How to set up a competition SQ system"
Obviously this topic can never be fully covered, nor does my teacher know anything about car audio...which is the main reason why I picked it. I can never run out of material and my teacher cant say its wrong because she knows nothing about it. w00t

Anyway, this is just an outline, wanted to run it by you guys to see what you thought as far as the order its in, anything major i left out, that kind of stuff.

Here it is:

I. Before You Begin
A. Set a budget
B. Select an organization and class to compete in
C. Familiarize yourself with your car

II. Selecting Components For Your Car
A. Head unit/Processors
B. Door Speakers
C. Subwoofers
D. Amplifiers
E. Sound deadening
F. Wiring

III. Installation and Enclosures
A. Tweeter placement
B. Midrange/midbass placement
C. Enclosures for midrange/midbass speakers
D. Enclosures for subwoofers
E. Routing wires
F. Making it work together

IV. Competing
A. Getting involved in the organization
B. Getting judged

As far as an outline goes, it looks pretty solid. Dont forget a "tuning" section. This is the most important. Make sure you cover things like path length differences, phase and polarity, EQ's and various processors.

Also, you may want to include exactly what the judges are looking for. Stage placement, tonallity, and such.

tuning will be under "F. Making it work together" staging and imaging will be under speaker placement, and what judges look for otherwise will be in judging

I feel the same way, Cody. I hate writing. I'm currently working on a 5-page paper for english, and that's too long for me! lol Last semester I did an 8-page paper, and I was fairly pleased with it, but I never wanna do anything that long again.

well, in the actual assignment instructions, it doesnt list a specific number of pages it has to be...i guess enough to just fully cover the subject. I had a couple of car audio books lying around the house and now i can only find the car stereo cookbook...i dont know what happened to my other one...sucks because i have to have at least 2 sources and i dont think the libraries around here have books on car stereo...

well, you could probably say, 'this is what worked for this guy, but this worked for this guy, so clearly audio is not a science'... as long as he doesn't present what we say as fact, it's all good...

Looks good -- I'd reorder a few things a bit though (see below).

    I. Before You Begin
    A. Set a budget
    B. Select an organization and class to compete in
    C. Familiarize yourself with your car

II. Selecting Components For Your Car
    B. Front Stage Speakers [Changed from 'door' because it's not necessarily door speakers]
    C. Subwoofers
    A. Source Unit / Head Unit
    D. Amplifiers
    E. Sound deadening
    F. Wiring

    III. Installation and Enclosures
    B. Midrange/midbass placement
    C. Enclosures for midrange/midbass speakers
    A. Tweeter placement / mounting
    D1. Subwoofer placement and firing

very true, front stage is a much better term. thanks
and while subwoofer placement and firing is needed, i dont think its as important. You can pretty much throw a sub anywhere and cross it off at 55Hz as long as you have good midbass up front

does anyone have any car audio books besides the car stereo cookbook? I have another somewhere but i cannot find it, nor remember what it was called. Reason im asking is that i need a couple of book sources, so if someone could find another book they have lying around and can tell me the title, author, copyright date, and publisher, you would be my new best friend.
    thanks-

Eh, I wouldnt say that. It depends on the vehicle. Mine is crossed at 50 Hz and is still very easy to locate. Ive been experimenting with different time alignment setting and different EQ'ing and have been getting some pretty good results.

Man now that Ive got my stage as good as it will get with my current speaker locations Ive since turned my attention to getting proper tonality and Ive learned something, tuning a competitive SQ system is F***ING HARD! Ive discovered that it is impossible without a big EQ with at least 13-15 bands! Neither my 7 band graphic or 5 band parametric can cut it. Ive switched from my graphic and have been using my parametric lately with better results but they just dont have the "room" necessary to get the problem areas that I have. Looks like another $300 for an Audiocontrol EQS.

It all goes back to that me being broke thing. The 701 would be a great little unit but its also $500! Plus its got a bunch of stuff I dont need. Right now all I need and want is a really good EQ and the EQS is the best choice for my budget. Im also toying with the idea of going active for my crossovers but havent decided yet. Besides, Im planning on eventually upgrading amps and theyll probably be Polk so I can just use the crossover on them.
