CBS confirmed that Ms. Couric will be anchor and managing editor of the evening news. Couric, 49, will also do prime-time specials and contribute to "60 Minutes" as part of the five-year deal.

I guess we will now get "perky" national news.

I don't watch the news so I don't care who does it. It's all a joke.

Katie is NOT a serious news anchor. It's bad news for CBS.

I give her 6 months tops before they replace her with someone else.

Remember Barbra Walters? She anchored ABC Evenings news back in 1976. That didn't last long.

C'mon, network news? Who cares. Are CBS Evening News or anything even getting ratings anymore? Ask anyone under the age of 40 who Ted Koppel or Dan Rather or Tom Brokaw are and you'll most likely get a blank stare.

Everyone's making a big deal cuz she's the first female news anchor... wow, they got a female in just as the medium is dying. It's like throwing in a female captain while a ship is halfway sunk.

I agree with the general consensus though - she's a glorified talk show host, throwing her in a network anchor position just shows how desperate they are for ratings.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I cannot stand Ms. Couric. She drives me insane. She ruins the Olympics for me every two years. Well, Costas isn't helping much either. Anyways, CBS will be last on my list of news to watch now. Good thing I don't watch much TV.

Good for Katie Couric. A milestone in her career. Obviously there's some people out there who think she's qualified, and chances are they know more to make that judgement than us "audio guys", especially the ones that claim to never watch the news in the first place.

On that note I never watch CBS, and that viewing habit will continue.

    NBC's Today anchor.

Btw, the truth is, I've been watching NBC's Today going back to Bryant Gumble and Jane Pauley time, so it is more of a routine addiction to me, to start my morning.

One very memorable event was on Tuesday Morning, September 11th, 2001...so yes, NBC Today is a big deal to me.

C'mon, it has nothing to do with the news, it's all demographics and advertising. They picked Katie because she appeals to a very broad audience (no pun intended) and increased viewership means increased advertising dollars. I suspect she may go the way Connie Chung did, but Katie for some unknown reason is very popular.

Well, one thing is for sure. CBS News' ratings cant go anywhere but up! After that idiot Dan Rather making up the news for so many years theyve ruined themselves. I guess they figure a little eye candy will help spruce things up. I know it cant hurt. And who knows, maybe one day they may decide to do something as drastic as objectively reporting the news! GASP!

you guys are to funny. the only thing is, is that the CBS Evening news is in the dumps ratings wise.. so any change is a welcome one. that's what insiders say.

So far this season, CBS Evening News has averaged 7.7 million viewers, 200,000 more than at this point last year, according to Nielsen Media Research. Meanwhile, "NBC Nightly News" is down by 700,000 viewers, and ABC's "World News Tonight" has lost 900,000.

So CBS news viewers went up after Dan Rather was ousted. Why change things now then? I just think there are other hard news women anchors out there over Couric.

The best of the best. They simply don't make TV news anchors like that any more.

Lack of creativity is also contributing to the death of the evening news. It's as bland as baked potato chips.
