MMC650 vs MMC6500

Sorry if you read this above but it was suggested that I post this question in the car audio section.
I want to buy either one of these 6.5 speaker for my boat but I can't decide if the 6500s are worth the extra dough. Especially, considering that an boat setup is an open environment. I can get a pair of 650s for $90 + $22 shipped vs. 6500s for $158 + $22 shipped. Besides the power handling is there any difference? One louder than the other or what? Thoughts?

for that price, in your situation, if i were you, i'd go with the 650 - for me, the extra sq just wouldn't be worth it out on the water, because i doubt i'd ever hear the differenceIt's not good, very fundamentally simply not good. - geolemon

The 6.5's will have better low frequency response and usually better power handling. Thats about it. In my opinion, theyre worth the extra $60.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

I have four of the Momo MMC650's in my 23' Stingray 230SX powered off a
Kicker 700.5 Amp (which will also power a pair of Momo 10's when I get them
in the boat shortly) and it's all run off a Pioneer DEH-P9600MP Head Unit.
The sound is absolutely STUNNING.... I have the luxory of adjustable time
alignment plus AutoEQ and I am sure that helps but I beleive the 650's sound
fantastic.
My front speaker locations are very close to what would be kick pannel pods
in a car audio install and my sound stage is where it should be. Actually for
an install in a boat, I would put it up against a LOT of car audio systems.
If you want to spend the extra change on the seperates you will get some
more low end on the 6500's but for me that's what the subs are for. I will end
up crossing over around 100Hz and my MMC650's are handling down to 63Hz
right now (no subs and a -6Db Slope) with no problem and the bass they put
out is suprising to be honest. Again this is all from my install, your speaker
locations may be different and you may want the 6500's it's up to you.
Also that's a fantastic price, if that's an ebay price you may want to do your
homework on the seller. I paid $128 a pair (shipped) for my MMC650's and I
felt that was a reasonable price from an authorized retailer.
What kind of boat are these going in and what other equipment will you be
using?

98,
I could have went a lot more over the top if I wanted. I did want to stick with
"Marine Certified" speakers since they are the most likely items to get wet
(being that they are down near the floor). But I didn't want the usual crappy
"marine" speakers. It was pretty clear that Polk Audio (which I had already
had a love affair with) would be the ideal choice.
When I saw the MOMO series was Marine Spec'd it was a no brainer....
I thought about the components vs. coaxial long and hard and to be honest
with the MMC6500 vs the MMC650's the only thing you are gaining is the
ability to remote mount the tweeter and a "little" better low end extension
but not enough. I come from the camp where if you want true midbass out
of a driver then you run 8" Mid woofs and then run 6.5's to do upper mid and
trebbel duty.
I beleive with the Momo 10's and the Momo 6.5's with the right XO setup I
will have an ideal sound system (for me) mind you I am not looking to shake
the water for three miles blasting techno bass CD's I wanted something very
clear, very musical that wasn't harsh but allowed me to hear the cymbals and
other high notes... In a boat that's not easy to do (no roof) and sometimes
the speaker placement is less than ideal.
The fact I could aim the tweeter where I needed the sound to go was a plus
and not having seperates I don't have to deal with delay issues if the tweets
were mounted high but the mids were mounted low. It makes it easier to get
everything right this way.
As for loud? VERY!
My Kicker 700.5 isn't the biggest amp in the world, my particular unit was
bench tested to 940 watts RMS with all channels driven at thier minimum ohm
rating. I am not driving the amp anywhere near that hard and my MMC650's
are probably getting a "realistic" 45 maybe 50 watts RMS per driver and they
sound stellar... They can certainly handle much more than what I am feeding
them, but I never run into lack of power my ears give out before the amp or
drivers do!
Customfab,
Bear in mind these are top notch drivers and they require power.. Don't try
to run them off a head unit, no matter what the head unit manufacturer says
they are NOT putting out 15 or 20 watts a channel RMS most decks are lucky
to put out 5 to 10 watts and it's usually not clean.
If you haven't already, budget for a good four channel amp (if you are going
with two pairs of 650's or 6500's) or even a 5 or 6 channel amp to run subs
and everything off of.
In a boat space is at a premium so look around and do lots of measuring
before you buy and make sure everything will fit and make sure your wiring
is done top notch... Fire on land you can walk away from.. Fire on water is
NOT good! -
