MMC650 vs MMC6500

I want to buy either one of these 6.5 speaker for my boat but I can't decide if the 6500s are worth the extra dough. I can get a pair of 650s for $90 + $22 shipped vs. 6500s for $158 + $22 shipped. Besides the power handling is there any difference? One louder than the other or what?

I noticed several owners complaining about tweeter distortion at high volumes with the 6500s but no complaints with the 650s. Thoughts?

With proper amplification, there should be no tweeter distortion at any sane levels with either set of speakers. The components offer the flexibility of mounting the tweeter away from the mid, allowing it to be aimed at the listening position, thus offering better imaging and a better soundstage. The quality of the speaker will also be better for the components.

However, if you're just looking for some background music on a boat, I personally wouldn't pay the extra money for the components. Unless you're going to be doing a lot of critical listening on your boat, the MMC650's and a solid 2-channel amp should be more than adequate.

Oh, and if you'll scroll down the main forum page a bit, you'll see there's a section devoted to just car audio. You'll get a lot more responses to questions like this down there.

Thanks for the input. I'm actually looking for more than background music but obviously due to "environmental" limitations the sound system on a boat can only go so far. I'm going to install two sets of 6.5s and am running fairly high end 12" subs with about 1400 watts RMS total. I'm hoping to anchor up and crank this thing up for some good sounding tunes. But once again, I don't know if I'll hear an audible difference b/t the 650s and 6500s in an open environment.

As a fellow boater I hope you'll take this the right way. Please don't drop anchor around other boats and crank up your stereo, it's very rude.
