My girlfriend is considering purchasing one and I would appreciate any input good or bad concerning this make of automobile. I think that this car manufacturer is underrated and from what I've seen and read so far there are many satisfied owners out there. Many thanks in advance folks! :)

Well, as my dad and I have noticed, how many old subarus do you see driving around? Personally, I see alot compared to the domestic ones. That shows their reliability IMO

I had a WRX that was very fun and reliable. Service department was great also. Like the above statement, lots of older ones still around

Yeah, this is my car, I love it! It's fun in the summer and the winter! Tell her to get the STi so you can have fun driving it, too.

The STi is a sweet ride. A friend took me for a jaunt in one once....

I'm not following this basing their reliability on the number of older models still around. I hardly ever see an older Subaru. But I do see a lot of newer ones, and hear a lot of good things about them. I thought they were a lot like Audi: Used to be plagued with tons of problems, now pretty solid.

Every Subaru owner I've known has become a Subaru loyalist. One Subaru lead to many in the future. With no exceptions. I think the WRXs are pretty rad in their own way.

Overall I'm a Subaru fan. I don't care much for the WRX (no offense Justin), I just can't get over the tuner car look of it. I think the new Legacy is a very nice car.

My only major complaint is their engines tend to be a little rough running. But that is to be expected of most 4 cylinders.

If you like the look of them, htey're some of the best cars out there. Solid, reliable, and they have a lot of balls. Very fun to drive. My dad bought two of them, loved em. Never a problem.

The only problem with subarus is that their head gaskets can be unreliable. My dad had to replace his, and it warped the head, too, so it cost him about $1500 to fix.

One of our other friends also had a gasket go.

But they're great in the winter!

Subarus are probably the most underrated cars on the planet. Very good cars with rock solid drivetrains. They aren't the prettiest cars out of Japan, but they certainly aren't the ugliest, either. I'd buy a Subaru over just about any other Japanese built car made. Their AWD system is as good or better than Audi's, imo, very seamless and predictable handling. And any of the turbo models have ample power and with the inherent traction, they can be quite quick.

    Good Luck with the decision.

I've had my '02 WRX since July of '01, back when you didn't see them on the road that much. It was fun turning all the heads. Now I see WRX/STI's everywhere.

Now that I've had it for 5 years I'm a big Subaru fan. I've had no mechanical problems and the car is still a blast to drive. The service dept at the dealership I go to is awesome as well.

As a company I think they are pretty customer oriented as well. In Austin there are 2 dealerships. I started out taking my car to the dealership I purchased it at but wasn't happy with the level of service. After every other visit or so Subaru sends out a survey. After my last visit with them (poor service) I filled out the survey indicating what I thought. Within 2 weeks the service manager at that dealership called me at work and was begging forgiveness and was willing to do anything to get me to bring my car back in for the next service. And I always thought surveys like that went straight into the trash.

My next car will probably be another Subaru.

I'm a huge fan, have owned 3 in the last 20 years (at one time my wife and I both had one.) Very reliable. Every day I commute 40+ miles out of the mountains in Idaho, and they handle snow and ice extremely well. I currently have a Legacy sedan, with SR6500's :), that's been the best car I've had. We put about 190k on our last one before turning it in.

There's a place in town that only works on Subaru's, which is nice too (cheaper than the dealer and they know their stuff).

just make sure you tell her NOT to drive like most subaru owners... i love the cars, but the drivers are pretty consistently some of the worst on the road... present company and a few others excepted, i'm sure... :)

I'll have to watch how she evolves her driving style with the new Subaru. When she was on the test drive it was obvious to me that the car had much better handling and acceleration than the 1999 Saturn SL2 that she is replacing...she really seemed to enjoy driving the car! She is cautious behind the wheel (good thing!) so I hope that it doesnt change into foolhardy overconfidence in the new car!
