Try and set speakers to small, crossover at 80hz, treble and bass flat.
Get an SPL meter from radio shack (about $40.00 I think) and adjust the speakers and sub to the same volume in the AVR. Then play music you like and adjust the sub (up or down) by ear to your taste.
You should be good to go at that point.

The double bass should only work if the speakers are set to large. If you set them to small, all bass below your crossover point will be sent to the subwoofer. 80 hz is a starting point (definately play with the different crossover settings) but you should get much better sound with your speakers set to small.

I would have to agree with Michael, on setting the xover @ 80 as a starting point.

i change to those settings.. but n.g. even 100hz crossover ,tone are treble n bass +8 very lil bass n bright sounding.. sub is open 180 2' oclock. mike

Why not have your treble and bass set flat at 0. Can you not xover at 80?
Turn your xover on the sub all the way up.
Do you have the phaze set at 180? -
bass n treble 0 ..? flat sounding? yes i can put crossover on receiver @ 80hz phase 0 and sub xover all the way up. mike

i guess i have to get use to the new sound.. i cross @ 100hz tones flat .. the sub. has a extra switch for dobly d. or 5.1 6.1 7.1 settings i'am curenntly @ 5,6,7.1 postion. is this correct men. mike

That's what I suggest. not flat sounding, neutral. But by all means if you like having them turned up, fill yer boots -
