db6500's @ 50W?

Hello All,

I'm planning on doing some work to my current car stereo. I'm pretty much sold on the db6500's. Currently I've got an eclipse amp that puts out 50 watts RMS per channel. I realize I could drive the db's with a lot more power, but are these things still gonna rock at 50w? I'd buy a new amp now, but it's just not in the budget this time around. Thanks for the advice in advance.

Just so you know, if you scroll down a ways there's a car audio forum where you'd get a lot more responses to questions such as this.

Is the Eclipse a four channel amp? If so, that'd be plenty of power and so wouldn't pose a problem, so I assume it's a stereo amp.

50watts will most likely make them sing pretty well, but I would recommend you not turn it up too loud. If you like really rockin' out while riding down the road, you should be mindful of the volume control. With the db6500's having an RMS power handling capability of 100 watts, it shouldn't be too hard to send the amp into clipping trying to jack up the tunes doing 85 down the highway with the windows down. If your 50 watt amp clips, it's gonna be putting out way more power than your components can handle and could likely toast 'em.

So, yes, it should be adequate, if you're carefuly with the volume control. But who likes to be adequate? I vote for glorious excess! :p

EDIT - You say the money for a new amp isn't in the budget this time around. If you're planning on upgrading to a beefier amp later on, by all means, your Eclipse should be a fine temporary amp.

Audiobliss: Thanks for the tips. Yes, eventually I plan on getting myself a new amplifier but currently I'm doing a major system overhaul (new drivers, head unit, audio processor, and sound deadening). After all that my bank account is pretty dried up. Please forgive my "newbieness", but how is it that my amp will tend to clip given that it outputs 50 watts and the drivers can take up to 100 watts? Would it be less likely to clip if they power ratings were matched, and if so why? I'm really sold on these speakers b/c they have been rated really well and I like the fact that should I choose to buy more power later on they can handle it. Thanks again.
