Man Accidentally Divorces Wife in Sleep

NEW DELHI - Village elders ordered a Muslim man in eastern India to leave his wife after he accidentally divorced her in his sleep, a news report said Tuesday.

Aftab Ansari uttered the Urdu word for divorce, "talaq," three times in his sleep, prompting his worried wife to discuss the matter with her friends, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

Under Islamic law, a husband need only say "I divorce you" three times to secure a permanent end to his marriage.

Muslim leaders in the couple's village in West Bengal state found out and decreed that Ansari's unconscious utterances constituted a divorce, PTI reported.

But 30-year-old Ansari said he had no intention of leaving his wife of 11 years.

"I have not given talaq. When I uttered talaq three times I had taken medicines to help me sleep," he was quoted as saying in the report.

The religious leaders said that before remarrying, the couple would have to be apart for at least 100 days and that the wife, Sohela, would also have to spend a night with another man and then be divorced by him.

PTI reported that the couple has been ostracized because of their refusal to abide by the decision of the village leaders.

that's the most rediculous thing I've ever heard. Not only was he drugged up and sleeping but she has to spend the night with another man and be divorced by him to? What if this other guy sleeps with her and really enjoyed it and does not want to give her up? She has no say so nor does her REAL husband? That's just beyond retarded.

My initial thread title was meant as a joke, but seriously, these people really are **** backwards! Then again, with all our lawyer BS with divorces, we're most likely percieved as **** backwards also.

no, they just take 3 times as long to deal with a situation... but they cost 1/3 the price... so it really washes out IMO. That's one reason why I hated Sprint PCS so much. Dealing with their CS in India was the worst. 90% of the time they didn't understand what I was trying to tell them and then they would just end up hanging up on me. It literally took 3-5 times longer to get the same result as if they would've just gave me one of their ghetto peeps in Dallas to take care of it. F Sprint.

as long as people in other countries are willing to work harder for less money, the jobs will continue to go overseas. And I don't see a thing wrong with that.

When a sweat shop has workers making less than a dollar a day how can we try to compete?
It would be so easy to send all our jobs overseas and eventually we would not have many jobs for Americans.

But I am sure they are all jobs that Americans don't want.

For starters, education and innovation. Everybody *cannot* pay Wal-Mart prices and expect to make $100k at a menial factory job or doing tech support. American workers should do something with their lives that sweat shop workers can't do elsewhere and your problem is solved.

I've worked hard, gone to college (and didn't major in underwater basketweaving) and work in an industry where I'm not worried about my job going overseas.

It would be so easy to send all our jobs overseas and eventually we would not have many jobs for Americans.

Everyone whines and **** about companies sending jobs overseas but we still continue to buy goods and services from companies that do this. Why? Because their products are cheaper. For most products, people will buy what's cheapest. The same principle applies to businesses hiring employees. Why should Dell hire Joe Dirt from Arkansas to do tech support for $30k/yr when someone in India with twice the education is willing to to it for $15k/yr?

I don't have to take a bath in the Ganges. I live in a country where men and women can open plumbing businesses and provide running water in my own home. :eek: Unfortunately, said business owners are also being put under increased governmental regulations that gets in the way of the free market.

See, if that business owner was running a crappy business the word would get out and he wouldn't have much business, and would eventually be out of the market. That's what competition is all about and why this country has been so great.

Keep pushing for more socialism so we can be equally miserable! It's not the businesses that are to blame for the social ills of these nations, it's the governmental structure and interference in their lives.

That's why it's called "Dell Hell" when you try to get some support. I'm thinking that Dell is betting on hardware reliability and a local computer geek (like me) to handle problems instead of people calling Dell's tech support and trying to get something done via some "tech" reading off of prescripted solution trees to solve problems.

my whole point is bitching about jobs going overseas or expecting the government to prevent companies from outsourcing is completely beside the problem. If companies are not allowed to outsource and are forced to pay inflated American wages, consumer product pricing will go up across the board while wages stay the same and your dollar is still worth less.

Regardless of whether you "own" your job or not (small business owners?), its one's own ambition and determination which will determine if you are successful or not. That's why I'm not worried and don't need anyone's opinion on my job security.

Its not a question of someone in a developing country willing to do your job for less money. Its that person willing to work harder than you are to get ahead in life. The standard of living in the U.S. is so disproportionately high that people here are lazy compared to those in developing countries.

The U.S didn't get it's high standard of living by being lazy, but it sure could lose it that way.

I can agree with this.

I also feel like our countries industry is in a world of hurt.
Almost any industry in America can make more money if they get their work done in another country and it is not all because of our wages. Part of the problem is the lawsuits.
Lawsuits drive the cost of products higher and many other countries do not have labor protection laws or workmans comp therefore, they don't have as many rediculous ways for lawyers to get money from their manufacturers.

I will also guess that they have higher incidences of workplace accidents & fatalites due to unsafe working conditions!

You can't work if you are permanantly disabled or dead!

Of course, because nobody would be safe unless it was mandated. They'd probably have lots of employees too if they were unsafe. :rolleyes:
