Receiver for RM6800

Hi. I made my first polk purchase today. I just placed an order for RM6800 speaker system. I have not yet decide on the receiver for drive these.

I mostly listen to music and rarely watch movies. I have a budget contraint because I stretched on the speakers. Please recommend a reciever for 250-300$.

The Pioneer 815 and 1015 are very nice in this range, as are the Harman Kardon, an Onkyo models

I found a Harman Kardon AVR 240 7.1 in my price range
Front power per channel (surround mode): 50 watts
Rear power per channel: 50 watts, THD: 0.07%

The only question is would have enough power (50W x 7) to drive the polk speakers?

HK power is real power. Equal to others that claim 100wpc. Don't worry, the 240 will drive the 6800 to their limits.

I would question why you chose a home theatre system then? You could have done MUCH better for music listening, and for less money.

I wanted something good once for all and so I picked up polk HT speaker system.
I would not want to spend time and money on HT for a long time to come.
I appreciate all the help and I like this forum.

I second the HK. I had an entry-level AVR130 rated at 45w, and it drove my Sapphire ST1 floorstanders just fine. And that blue volume control is pretty sweet looking.

Hi. Time has come for me to upgrade and add a new HDTV to my home theater. Now the problem is hooking up the avr340 to the hdtv. its does not have a HDMI/DVI output and so does it mean that I have to live with my current tv or buy a higher end receiver. I am yet to buy a hdtv but I will most probably be buying 32" LCD TV from either sony, samsung or panasonic.
I know this question I should be asking harmon kardon but I guess there are lot of people here who can point me in the right direction. thanks for your time.

You do not have to run your video through your AVR, although it is more convienent for most people.

I am a firm believer having the least amount of connections between the source and the television; less connections, less chance to introduce noise.

I recently purchased the HK AVR 340, but the only video I have coonected is the video out from the receiver to the TV for the OSD.

My DVD player is HDMI(using video portion only) straight to tv, cable is straight to the tv. My television is Sony KDF-E42A10 HDTV.

The AVR 340 does have 2 component inputs. Most HD cable boxes nowadays have both DVI and component video out, and digital and analog sound out, so you could use the component connections for HD if you wanted to go through the receiver.

Somebody told me that my receiver would be useless with hdtv and so I was a little concerned because its just 4 months old now. I also found this link while browing throught that suggests that avr340 has problems. I didnt understand much about the problem though.

I also just purchased a rm6800 system. Is anyone running this with the SR504? I'm wondering if that will have enough power and inputs. I'll need to hook up:
42" LG LCD
HD DISH network dual receiver
Nintendo GameCube
DVD/CD player
ipod

My old system is ancient, so I didn't have to deal with component inputs, and only my DVD player was S-Video. I would like to welcome myself to the 21st century! Any input would be great. I need to buy my receiver from Circuit City (financing) and this was the receiver that seemed like it would match up nicely and is priced nice as well ($269). But if I have to spend another $100 to get it right, no big deal. By the way, we don't watch movies or listen to music too loud, so I'm worried about cranking it.
