A Dumb Question

Well lemme give you guys the rundown to better understand my problem.I recently had my 8 year old system installed in my 01 Galant. It consists of a 15 inch Cerwin Vega sub, a no-name 1000w amp, and a compacitor.I noticed after the install, that the subwoofer sounded horrible.I brought it back to the shop that installed it for me and they told me the problem was with the sub being old.I recently replaced the sub with a new Polk Dual db124 box.Now from inside the car the sub doesnt sound all that bad.It definatley seems like it could be stronger/louder but thats about it.My question is, should the sub sound weak when i have the trunk open? Not listening from inside just basically standing outside by the trunk it seems like it has almsot no power at all.Is that normal? I would expect it to almsot knock me off my feet with power.Im basically just trying to figure out if i now need a new amplifier to go along with the replaced sub.
So again to better understand. When your standing right near the sub should it sound weak, although its putting out good bass inside the car? Or should it pump regardless and i need a new amp?
Please help im the ultimate noob.

I would guess without the boundry effect usually gained in a car environment, a sub would sound significantly weaker outside if the car. How far away are you? There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

Its wierd, from inside it sounds fine, but putting your ear right next to it, it would seem as if the subs were damaged.Basically if you didnt listen to them inside the car first, you would think they were blown. Is that normal? I think i s hould just get a new amp to be sure.
