Any advice for me?

Just purchased a Denon AVR-2106 and was thinking about adding a rear
surround(s). Question A) Is it really worth it? , and What about in-wall
mounted speakers vs. external? The rear surround(s) will likely go on or near
a brick fireplace. See my layout in SystemShowcase if that would help. Thx.

So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

My first suggestion is to not post questions like this in the Forum testing area, which is usually not read by a lot of people (it's more for seeing if you can post, and how yoru formatting is, not for asking actual questions).
If you're talking about rear speakers, as in 7.1 instead of 5.1, I'd say it's usually not worth it unless you have a huge room. If you just mean surround speakers (5.1), then if you watch a lot of movies it's definitely worth it.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Polrbehr welcome to Club Polk. If you're sitting position is against the rear wall DO NOT go 7.1. All you get is a big mess of sound. 3feet seating distance minimum from the rear wall.
If you haven't already bought surround speakers, I recommend getting the fxi series for the side wall (in a 5.1 setup) and putting them in the dipole position. If your concern is placement due to a fireplace, direct radiating monopoles (regular speakers) are prob. not your best bet due to the much smaller sweet spot and localized sound.
Although your receiver is designed for 7.1, running 5.1 will still sound great. It'll free up the power supply in the Denon, thus the 5 amplifiers that are functional will likely sound better.
