What is connecting in series? (2 subs)

I have twin 20-39 CS subs. Looking for amplification solution. Looks like cheapest and best solution might be partsexpress 500 watts plate amplifier. People have suggested I wire in series? However, wouldn't that make it 8 ohms. Also, I assuming this means making regular sub connections and then connecting right and left from sub to the other sub?
