Those are great speakers! Did you buy them or are you just gathering an opinion for a potential buy?

Best rock speaker I've heard, Very good for almost everything else.

Only thing I do not like on them is solo piano.

Why do you think that is? Cabinet resonance or the SDA presentation. Some piano doesn't sound right on my RTA's as well. I attribute it to a certain cabinet resonance that gives many of the notes in the middle odd harmonic overtones, a dissonance of sorts. Although on some recordings it sounds fine.

90+% SDA, Noel... If the piano is dual mic recorded, as most are, it's SDA'd to about 20' wide. Not exactly realistic.

When I pull the SDA IC, the soundstage collapses to the right width, but still there are better "piano speakers". It may be the SL2000 tweeters' FR hump.

In my collection I'd put the DQ-10's atop the list for piano.

Piano is tough to reproduce and can be an indication of high performance speaker, but I find it has to be equally tough to record it correctly. Some piano recordings sound dreadful while others sound very good.

Pop artists like Tori Amos, Sarah MacLachlan, and even Elton John & Billy Joel don't seem to always get it right recording wise (with exceptions of course). I listen to David Lanz, Suzanne Ciani, Michael Jones, Michael Riesman, George Winston, etc. These typically are recorded with proper attention given to the process and they are soloists.

    FWIW

Sorry for the derail.........if you are thinking about buying SRS, stop thinking and buy them. You won't be disappointed.

I have less of a problem with the pop pianists on SDA's. My issue is more with classical, e.g., Horowitz, Serkin, Ashkenazy, etc.

Perhaps a dumb question. Please, what is the signature series. My 2.3's have Polks signature scrolled on the front of the grills - does that make them signatures, and if so how are they different from "regular' 2.3's

There are no regular 2.3's, just SDA SRS 2.3's and the newer SDA SRS 2.3TL's. Yours are the signatures.

Not dumb... we all didn't know at some point in time.

SRS (Signature Reference Series) was the tag on a whole line-up of SDA Polks, namely:
    • SRS's/1.2's/1.2tl's
    • SRS 2's
    • 2.3's/2.3tl's
    • 3.1's.
For all these model numbers there were no "non-SRS" speakers, just SRS's. So there were no "regular" 2.3's.

    There were "regular" SDA's, however. These include the 1's (the 1, 1A, 1B and 1C) and the 2's (2, 2A and 2B).

The CRS's (Compact Reference Series) were tweeners, i.e., carried the "reference" label, but not Matt's autograph. There were two CRS models, the CRS replaced later by the CRS+.

    Clear as mud?

well know i dont have a set my dad does and let me tell you guys they sound awesome, he has a 32 bit graphic eq and all the music is very powerfull the highs are crisp and clear, and with the veloydyne subwoofer it produces thundering lows, when in the room you can feel the air move.
