What have you used the phono input on your pre-amp or receiver for besides a turn table?

Now, either I am missing something, or this is an odd question.

Well, a magnetic phono input (which I assume is what you refer to) has enough gain to take a tape head output as an input, but not the right EQ.

I have seen "reverse RIAA network/attenuator" gizmos for sale that would let one use a mag phono input as an additional line-level (AUX) input, but that is a truly bizarre solution to the 'not enough inputs' problem!

If you have a moving coil cartridge, you should be able to stick it into any input other than the phono input as it does not need a preamp stage (from what I remember reading).

I've never used or seen a phono input be used for anything other than a turntable being hooked into it.

Negatory, good buddy. Virtually all moving coils are very low output and low impedance, and need either an additional gain stage (head amp or pre-pre amp) or a step-up transformer. There are some high-output MC cartridges (e.g., Sumiko Blue Point), but they're at MM levels, not line levels, and still need EQ.

Having said that, there are two (and I think three) flavors of phono cartridges that'll work with a line-level, un-equalized input: ceramic (piezoelectric), crystal, and "strain-gauge" (maybe also called "solid state"). The first two are generally not the provice of hi-fi (or record longevity), and I don't think there are any current suppliers of the latter.
