Besides: the drivers, wiring, and the crossovers, what are these speakers supposed to look like internally? Mine seem to have an overabundance of acoustic matting. There's no air space. These were bought used. I have a feeling they were modified and want to know what the OEM design was. Anyone know?

I have never actually opened mine up, but I would expect quite a bit of fiberglass dampening material inside...resonance is an enemy (unless carefully planned for) in speaker design.

My 7's have material behind the tweeter that stops at the midwoofer. From there to the bottom there is none. And there is no resonance problem. But adding material to the box accually tricks the woofers into thinking there is more airspace than there is. In the case of the 10's, Polk might have thought the box itself did not have enough airspace so they added dampaning material to compinsate. IMO in a sealed inclosure you can't have too much dampaning material.

The Monitor 10, at least the 10B and 10 Series 2, has a large amount of damping material inside. There should be one tightly rolled sheet behind the tweeter. It essentially occupies all the space in the upper 1/3 of the cabinet. Then there should be another sheet, split in half to fit around the brace, occupying the area behind the drivers and passive radiator.

Ok, that's exactly how mine are damped. It must be normal. Thanks you, guys.

Hmmm, my 10Bs didn't seem to be packed that much, just around the walls really... There is airspace. Sound absolutely phenominal, so I don't think I'll change a thing.

When I change my polyswitches, I'll peek into the cabinet again to make sure.
