Polk Monitor 50 - CSi3 // Where to put them

Hello,

I'm writing from Buenos Aires, Argentina :)

My question is the following. I have a pair of Monitor 50 at the front, and a CSi3 of central. I'm designing a new "furniture" and it will have 120cm wide. At the center, it will have the CSi speaker.

I would like to know if the distance of 130 cm aprox. is good to hear my Monitor 50 or the sound won't be good. I think it's not enough distance. For example, i had two Bose 701 speakers before and the manual says you must place them 200/250 cm from each other minimum.

Please, I would appreciate if someone can help me with my problem.

I have other question too. What is the recommended height to place my CSi3 speaker?

Excuse me about my poor english.

Thank you very much :)

Nicolas.

Hi and welcome to Club Polk. That distance will be just fine. You might not be able to "toe in" your speakers like alot of listeners do, but it will be just fine. My speakers are only 6ft. away and they sound just fine. For distance with your other speakers from your actual listening position, as long as you apply correct distancing within the speaker settings of your Harman Karman 230 you should be fine with that distance.

There is no recommended height for your csi3. Just put it on top of your TV and have it slant downwards with the supplied sticker bottoms that come with the product.

    Nicolas, bienvenido :)

Dolby recommends a 20-degree angle between the front speakers. So, with a L/R distance of 130cm, that would require a seating distance of 3.7m.

As for the height of the center, many people recommend that the tweeter be at ear-level. However for a center speaker, that may cause your display to be too high. So, you may want to place the center channel lower and angle it up as Andrew suggests.

    Hello Andrew,

    Thank you for your help.

The CSi3 will be placed on top of my new "furniture" (don't know how to say in english :) because my tv is an LCD, not a normal tv set.

My TV will be placed on the wall. Otherwise, the CSi3 can be placed on the other side, and it have a little inclination to top. Maybe I can place it there.

I don't know what you mean with the phrase "toe in" :(

Thanks again for your fast answer,

    Nicolas.

    Eric, gracias :)

My seating distance is 250cm, 120cm less than you recommend me :(

Here I made a drawing of my bedroom with it references (it's in scale)

What do you (Andrew, Eric and other members) think about my audio location? I'm not sure about the subwoofer location.

I'll be waiting for your answer. Thank you very much again.

that looks great to me. that's actually funny because that's the exact room layout i'm going to be using when I move, hence is why i'm downgrading from 7.1 to 5.1; due to space limitations.

    Nicolas,
Compromises are almost always required when setting up a home theater. Don't worry about the distance if you can't change it!

You should consider reversing the positions of the subwoofer and audio rack. The subwoofer may sound better and/or louder in the corner.

Also, try to move your center speaker to the front of the furniture instead of the back. This will prevent reflections from the top surface of the furniture, and should result in a clearer sound.

    Really? hehehe that's great :)

So you think it will be the best room layout i can use in my bedroom, right?

The subwoofer is well located there?

    Tnx :)

    Eric,

Perfect, i will move the center speaker at the same level of the Monitor 50, to the top of the forniture.

The problem is the subwoofer position. I can't move the audio rack to the left because i won't be able to enter to the room, because it will leave me only 40 cm to get inside :S

The other thing i can do, is place the subwoofer down the audio rack (it's made of wood, 150cm height.

    What do you think?

    Thanks again !!

Maybe you could experiment with both positions when you set up the room, let your ears decide.
