Would an amp help with sound / performance?

I have a pretty modest set-up right now. I bought the Sony STR-DA5ES receiver from BrentMcGhee (thanks again, man) on the forum and have a JBL 5.1 set-up (E-20's for the front, E-10's for the rear, EC35 center and the E250P subwoofer). I use it for music and HT applications equally. It sounds great and all, but was wondering whether or not getting an external amplifier would help with sound. I've noticed that with watching DVD's, I have to turn it up just about halfway (-40 dB according to the display) to hear it really well. Being naive, I think this taxes the receiver and may overload it. Am I correct in this asumption or not? If so, would an amp help take the strain off the receiver? Just looking for a bit of advice.

I have been looking for a used Adcom 7300 (to power all five speakers). I saw that aaharvel had one for sale, but not sure if it is still available. As always thanks for the advice and please take it easy on me for owning Sony and the JBL's!;)
