I feel like some kind of imposter starting a thread in the car audio section, but this was too good to pass up :

There's a new camera that can also measure sound levels, and it may be used to ticket cars with too loud a car stereo.

Link to story here.

Scary.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Believe it or not, I actually support this.

I hate the idiots that drive around blasting 150 db's thru a neighborhood as they are not only annoying but they also give car audio enthusiasts a bad and undeserved reputation. Ive always been for enforcement of noise ordinances and this is a good way to do it. Some legislatures were going to desperate measures like St Louis banning even the ownership of car audio gear. With technology like this, police can target the ones that are actually blasting their gear thru a quiet neighborhood and leave us law abiding folks alone.

    God bless technology.

It's a cool idea but I'm not really for it. I don't really care for the usual stereotype the car audio guys get but I think this would be more of an inconvience to the people doing other stuff. What if you want to take your muscle car or bike out for a rip on the weekend and you get tagged by one of these? I suppose it just depends on how sensitive these things will be, but perosonally I think it'll just cause a lot of people grief.

I'd rather see cops enforce it than something sitting on a pole watching you.

Well cops cant really enforce a loud stereo law cause its hard to tell what 130 db is just by hearing it. With these things they wont have to guess. And most noise ordinances dont affect muscle cars any as long as theyve got a muffler. Most car exhausts are rarely over 110 db. A NASCAR stock car only registers 130 db so I doubt your Chevelle will be in any danger.

Of course they wont ticket muscle cars or lawn mowers or harleys. Everyone knows that those arent really noises unlike car stereos. Ticket the guys with stereos!!!!

a ticketing system that can target drivers with thumping stereos, loud exhausts or who may be too heavy on the horn.
I figure that would target people with harleys and muscle cars.

That's a good point Mac. It really does depend on how sensitive these things will be. It does provide more consistant law enforcement by removing humans from the equation (them to determine if it's 'too loud' or not).
