NAD T763 protection mode issue

Since I completed my LSi HT setup, I have had my NAD T763 reciever go into protection mode and shut down while running movies at high volumes. It is rated to handle a 4 ohm speaker load, so why does it go into protection mode? It has only happened twice, but I just wonder if I'm asking too much of this reciever. FYI, it only runs my LSiC and the LSiFX's, since I have a 2 channel amp for the mains (LSi25's).

I have the T773 model for over 2 years now & absolutely love it. I never had to drive 4ohm speakers but that is what NAD is known for, great power & high current. I can't give you a reason why it goes into protection mode. Running your Polk's should not pose any problem at all for the T763. Do you have proper clearance all the way around to prevent over heating? If you do & it still goes into protection mode I would call or e-mail there cust service.

You are probably asking too much of the NAD. You should get separate amplification for the rest of your speakers.

Whether the amp is acting up and should be stout enough to power the three speakers or not, you should get separate amplification. More power is always better. :D

Damn right!:D But the fact that the receiver is going into protect mode at high volume is a clear indication that it is being over worked & can't handle the load at high volume. And sometimes you just WANT to crank it up!

    Is it a refurbished unit?

    Are you using soft clipping?

How hot is the unit at shutdown? Is it in an enclosed rack? How much space on top AND the sides?

It has fans correct? I would pop the top on it and check them.

He certainly doesn't need additonal amplification.

I second what dorokusai said. Those other guys don't have a clue what they're talking about. Any of them ever owned a NAD? Your T763 can handle the Polk's w/ no problem. Could be a problem w/ the unit. Get in touch w/ cust. service.

I'm not saying anything about the aforementioned ideas....just that buying something new, is not part of troubleshooting a problem.

The NAD is not in an enclosure, so I know its getting plenty of air. As far as I know, it doesnt have fans, but then again, I never checked that closely. I'll call customer service tommorrow.

With AV recievers, it is usually the front stereos are the ones rated for higher loads compared to the center and surrounds. Since all the speakers are 4 0hms, you'll really need separate amps for them. :P

i'm thinking the NAD is being overtaxed.. all those speakers are 4ohm..and if you turn it up loud.. those speakers could draw alot more power from the receiver. putting into protect mode.

Try getting a 2 or 5 channel external amp. and that should ease the load on your NAD. make sure the amp can handle 4ohm loads though.. not all of them can. My Adcom 5400 will, but at low volumes. before the overload lights begin to flicker.

Those who think the receiver is running out of gas are just wrong. Their gear is designed to push 2 ohm easily. That particular reciever is rated at 300wpc at 4 ohm. If it is going into protect, it is an issue with the receiver, not it's ability to drive the LSis.

Just got off the phone with a NAD techie. HE said that one of my speakers may be running at lower than 4 ohms on a consistent basis. He also said is may be the wiring (something about conductance, I dont remember specifically). He also said, he had heard of folks with monster wire having issues with this. My two mains are powered by monster cable. I originally had this problem when I was just running the mains, and then only rarely. I got a seperate 2 channel amp, and problem solved. I'll keep an eye on it and not run it too loud for too long on HT or surround. Most likely, I'll get a 3 channel amp at some point in the future.

He suggested removing each speaker from the setup, power it up loud, and see if one speaker in particular is running below 4 ohms. He said if that is the case, I could ask for a new cross-over for that speaker. Does this sound reasonable? Sounds like a pain in the **** to me!
