I have a question about some speakers I have come in contact with. They are Digital Research speakers models DR2800. They have like a tweeter and 5 mids along with a 10" on the side. I cannot find them anywhere on the net. They were given to me to try and get whatever I could with them since the dude knew i was into HT. He bought them from a guy in a parking lot he thinks the speakers are hot, but they are in original sealed boxes which I have yet to open. Any idea if these are worth anything or not?? Thanks

They are all over ebay under many different names, theater research, digital research, etc. Basically not even worth having to collect dust.

There are a lot of these floating through the Seattle area, and everywhere else I'm sure. I have heard them and they are not worth it at all. These people make me sick. They know they have a crappy product, and don't care! The seller always wants like $2000 for them too. If you are going to spend that kind of money, spend the $2000 on a pair of Polk speakers. You won't regret it.

Bahahaha, I have a friend that bought a pair of those. I think he paid 600 for them. Some guy flagged him down one day when he heard my friend car stereo and offered them to him.

Friend went straight home and grabbed 600 bucks cash for the guy. This is hillarious.

That scam was (is) going on here in Montreal too. They grab you in the parking lot with one of several type of scams. They have legitamite looking invoices, brochures...the works. They tell you that they have an extra pair in the truck by mistake and yada yada yada.....

Oh sure they'll work, but you can build the things yourself for about $50 bucks worth of the cheapest junk you can find.

To be completely honest, they actually looked nice. The one's my friend got are a nice cherry speaker with a thick gloss finish. Drivers are all bronze colored and I think it has 10's on the sides of each tower.

Either way, the scam is certainly going on in upstate New York.

Has anyone seen the website? www.trtheaterresearch.com
By looking at it, one might think it to be a legitimate business. The prices displayed aren't cheap either unless it's not the same "rip off" speakers that were mentioned. This is actually the first I've heard of the "white van" scam. The only way I would know for sure is by searching the web and magazines for editorial reviews. I use ecoustics.com as my key resource in finding such reviews. Bottom line is, if you have never heard of a certain brand it's always best to research it. There are way too many good speaker manufacturers out there to take chances with a fly by night company with little or no reputaion.

One might think that if one were near-illiterate. Just read that intro on the opening page: terrible punctuation, meaningless sentences, gruesome grammar. It's not even good enough to call "engrish."

A friend of mine got a pair for $100. Not worth but better than that $600 posted above, feel bad for that guy. the cabinets are not bad. They need some extra bracing. The drivers are junk. They sound horrible. This van scam has been around here in Detroit for quite awhile. For $2000 you can get a whole container of them right off the boat from China. For an extra $10 bucks they will print whatever you want on the box.

I have a friend that drives one of those white vans. Actually he drives an Explorer. He is always telling me if I want them I can get them for around $90.00. He says he has to get $90.00 to pay for them and anything over that is his money.
He actually is doing pretty well selling them.
I also don't think he hits the same place twice.

heh...they are in Chicago as well.
    The white van.....three times now.
I about two weeks ago I was walking ...and a guy in an SUV pulls over and asked me if I wanted Home Theater.
I asked him "Are they Polks?" He said NO and I said..."then beat it"
    I told him good!
Audio system lost to water damage... :(
