Choice of Sub

Well after getting getting my Rti 4's this week I realized what I could be building towards and decided I wanted more. At first I couldnt decide what to get next, but I'm pretty sure Ive narrowed it down to a sub.

I was looking at the psw12, but I've been questioning it after reading of some hiss feedback and excessive port noise. Ill probably have around 300 to spend in a few weeks or less and wouldn't mind getting a few suggestions if you experts could.

I know it really shouldn't bother me this much but I really wanted a timbre match for the 4's because I love the cherry so much. Thing is, its a pain to find a cherry sub, the only thing I've seen are the psw10 and 12. Anything else is hundreds of dollars out of my price range. Does anyone know of any decent subs with a cherry finish? If not, I will just have to get used to the idea I guess. Any suggestions will be appreciated and thought about. Thanks.

I just got THIS KLIPSCH sub open box from Best Buy for $319.00 for my parents HT. I was pretty impressed with it's output in a pretty large room. I think it would be great for movies but I did not have a chance to listen to music with it yet. You might be able to find one open box or on Ebay. Reviews

Other than that, if you could increase the budget a little I would go with SVS all the way. from what I have read, Polk's subs leave something to be desired.

There is a possibility that if I save my pennies I might be able to swing that pb10-isd in a few months. I guess I'll have to just get over the phobia of mismatched speakers. I don't know why it bothers me so very much.

Though if anyone else has a suggestion for a sub in the 400 or less price range Ill take it.

Get the SVS, I dont own one, but from all the raves and suggestions I read, at 400 dollar range, this thing is THE ONE. I mean, people say that, if you want a budget sub, get a Dayton, otherwise, save your pennies and grab the PB10, "this is where the real bass begins" .


I myself, a few minutes ago, could afford a Dayton, but I decided not to because the new ones arent as good as the old ones, I couldnt afford an SVS PB10, too much, so I grabbed the next best thing, BIC ACOUSTECH H100 !!!!!

Phobia is a good word for what you feel. You just need to understand how speaker makers work.

A speaker maker may actually use different brand speakers within the same box. A maker might use a tweeter from Peerless, or Vifa (LSi line) and mids from Focal or Morel. This happens all the time. This can be done successfully because no speaker produces the same frequency as the other.

The difference between speakers become even less important when it is a subwoofer being considered. What you want is a sub that produces enough high quality bass to fit your needs. Besides, a sub doesn't always sit next to your other speakers anyway. Many subs look alike too so this helps.

Matching is important speaker to speaker for multi channel usage. Use 2 of the same for stereo, and try to match types for surround usage if you can since you want them to sound the same on the same sounds.

Sorry to dig this back up, but Im still not sure here.

I would love to get the SVS and I could certainly swing it if I saved for a while. My issue is size and the fact that I know even the smallest SVS would be more than I really need in terms of power. I will mostly be running a sub in a small dorm and a very small extra room at home thats no bigger than 8x10. I understand that it is a great sub and after reading reviews I actually would love the pb10 isd, Im not sure if I can justify it.

Would something like the psw303 be better? I know the 10 and 12 are the monitor level subs, but what about the rti line? Do leave something to be desired just like the monitor series? Im not really trying to save a bunch of money or anything, Im just trying to get something that would work for the room I have. I dont know if a 300watt, 60+ pound sub would be what I need.

I'm thinking about getting a Mirage Omni S8...only ~$200 and supposed to be way be way better than the Daytons...just my $.02:cool:

I'd love to know how that sounds when/if you get it. Running the same fronts would give me a good basis on what I should be looking into.

there's nothing wrong with the Polk subs at all.. it's just that some people prefer other brands. just like receivers or TV's.

if color is important to you.. get the Polk that best matches the rest of you speakers. Many of us started with a Polk sub.. keep it, use it tilll you have the coinage to upgrade to a different brand as needs arise.

Don't fret at this point about getting the "right" sub.. there isn't such as thing as the "perfect" subwoofer. If there was.. i'm sure it woud be $$$.

I dont even know what I want now. Ultiman mentioned the s8, so I took a look into it. Sounds pretty good, high(ish) ouput, small size, decent price. And according to Mirage's website, they come in cherry!

I just can't manage to find that version ANYWHERE. If I could find it in Cherry for around what it's going for I would probably jump on it. I didnt read anything negative in the reviews I found.

Most retailers have a 30-day+ money back guarantee, so I would suggest getting a sub and "listen" to how it works with your current audio set up. Most people react to the "hype" of a manufactures, but I always believe you should "test drive" speakers or products in your own home environment and let your ears make the judgement. You can purchase the PSW12 around $300+.
