Do you think the difference is on the data trasmitting side (Denon) or the receiving side processing (Benchmark DAC), or maybe both? I'm guessing that since the Panasonic configuration had the same results, the differences are in the processing on your DAC side.

I don't know. The Panasonic had no coax out so I couldn't check. I do remember trying the DH Labs cable before, and replacing it with the AES/EBU cable w/the CEC CDP. I've run the benchmark before with other coax cables, and typical copper IC's and it sounded fine. I think I'm gonna try a single Kimber PBJ tonight as a dig coax just for **** & grins...

Personally in my system I've never found anything with silver in it to be very pleasing. I've tried Silver interconnects and Silver speaker cables and they were all very forward sounding and lacking in overall bass extension. Be interesting to see your results with the Kimber Coax vs. Toslink.

I've never done a side-by-side comparing Toslink and Coax with my Dac. Mostly because I dont' own a good toslink cable. Let us know more as you experiment Steve. I also think the sl2000 w/ it's Silver coils are possibly why they sound a bit forward and harsh at times. This is just a guess on my part, but it would seem to fit the my experience of all things Silver in audio.

Interesting, my DH Labs D-75 cable was anything but forward and aggresive in my system. Maybe it was the Bel Canto DAC that was a bit more laid back and a better match with the D-75.

The PBJ did tame the treble a bit, when my Sonicwave Toslink comes I'll compare it to the PBJ and see what I find...

It may simply boil down to the fact that the Denon isn't quite the transport that the CEC was.

Personally I've had a hard time telling the difference between transports. Where are you getting your Sonic Wave cable from? It seems I have an Impact Acoustics Sonic Wave Toslink in my 2nd rig. Is it the same animal? I doubt it because I didn't pay much for it being as it's in a 2nd less critical system. I think I paid about $30 sourced from this website

Hell, I don't remember what I paid. I bought thru Amazon rather than the above website because shipping was free with all Amazon purchases over $20.

    Same animal Steve?

Part # 40231, the .5mtr Sonicwave. The first one top of the page.

I'm not sure what's going on, today, the system sounds fine. My ears having been playing havoc with me lately with the changing weather, alot of congestion, etc. The listening continues....I had the D-75 back in and didn't notice the same problem as before, so I'm sure it's my ears. I still find little, if any difference from my cheapo Monster Toslink and the D-75. I still seems as though the Toslink gives a touch more neutrality, and a little smoother in the treble (very subtle though).

I'll be picking it apart all this week until I come to some conclusions.

One thing is for sure, this Denon has the picture qualty in spades! Gorgeous color, very fine image detail and excellent sharpness. There's no doubt I'm lovin' the video half of this player.

Yep, it's the same Toslink I purchased. Didn't think it was that much $$$, but I may have gotten some kind of deal thru Amazon as I'm always looking for good value (read=cheap). Keep us posted on your findings. I know exactly what you are experiencing Steve, that's why it takes me some time to evaluate things. I tend to wait for a long term impression over several different listening sessions. There are lot's of things that can affect our perceptions and sometimes our senses are just out of whack.

As it turns out, it was subtle differences in the transports. The CEC will be staying as my CD transport.

So your quest to use one player for both DVD and CD didn't quite work for you?

Nope, all is not lost though, I did end up with one hell of a DVD player. I also learned some things along the way---number 1, TRUST MY EARS. I should have realized that all this cable swapping was telling me something...

I've also learned that I'm one picky son of a ****...
