Forget Case 1. No option for connecting to receiver alone.

Case 2 gives best bass.............Passive subs require a separate amp. The sub output of your receiver is line level (low power)and goes into the amp that drives the sub speaker. The crossover unit in your receiver for that sub output will work fine to help accomplish this.

Case 3 looks best to others since big DIY subs are a turn off to many and alot less hassle and tuning.

The sub in the listing looks to be alot for the money.

You could just buy a plate amp for it and then mount it in a seperate box.

Something like this or even this would work just fine. I own the first one there and it powers my atlas 15 quite nicely.

I think he's trying to point out how diy subs can prove a much better bang for your buck than a retail sub since you have to deal with more things than just taking it out of the box and putting it in a corner.

Check out the plate amps at parts express ~ link. It'll add to the cost but you might be able to get by with something a little less powerful than what I first linked to...

At a budget of <200 you might consider saving a little bit. It's hard to get a decent sub for that price range, but if you held off for a little bit and bumped that price range to around 400 you could get something really worthy of the money.

    Hi doggy750,

The description and picture of the sub looks impressive. I don't think you'll find many subs in that price range with real maple veneer and heavily braced and damped. Can the seller tell you if it's a sealed sub and what the f3 is?

A couple issues I see are:

The sub is big so you should take acceptance factor into account (ie. will it fit in the intended space and such). Will it overpower the room?

You're F3 on that is probably in the neighbourhood of 25-30 hz (guessing and could really be off here). It's not going to rival a SVS but should be adequate and comparable to the psw350 I think.

Set up will be limited. You probably will not have control over phase, high pass/low pass and will have to depend on what's available from your receiver.
Something like a paradigm X30 controller would give you those controls but then you're spending more money.

You'll need an external amp or sub amp. I don't think you need gobs of power if your expections are in line with a PSW350.

I think you're getting really good value at the price (based on some assumptions) but you have to decide if you want to put in the extra time and dollars to get it set up and working really well. It's for your dad right?

You might be able to get a psw350 cheaper once you've factored additional costs.

    regards

    Dave
