Subwoofer Amplifier

I am wondering if there is anyone here running a seperate subwoofer amplifier. I have seen references to people doing this but have no knowledge of the subject. I assume that the better the subwoofer, the better the amplifier inside but are those amplifiers anywhere near the quality of a good dedicated amp? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks

Many consider high quality amps on subs for the most part to be a waste of $$$. Subs can exhibit as much as 10% distortion and still not be audible.

Even SVS sells cheap pro amp designs (Samson) for its passive models instead of a consumer audiophile model.

Power and not quality is usually the order of the day for subs. I run a separate amp for my sub, an infinite baffle design. I have run it off of a parasound 1500 and nady xa 1100. The 1500 was putting out about 100 watts per woofer (4) also a far better quality amp and the nady is closer to 200. The wattage was definately better, more extention and less effort from the nady. And besides who wants to waste a good amp by only feeding it 80 Hz and below?

    thanks guys,
that makes alot of sense, if it is not so much the quality of the amplifier then it seems like it would not be that hard to put the amp inside of the subwoofer.

    thanks for clearing that up!

My sub is run off of one channel from my Cinepro amp. While it does sound great - I do not know how it sounds compared to the 25-31 PC+ (powered) version of the sub.

Maybe if Opus is up to it sometime, he can bring over his PC+ and we can compare it to my CS+. (the only difference should be the amp then....)

I am running a NAD 2200 for my subs. Depending upon my mood I either run two Stillwater Designs C-12 in an isobaric configuration or one Dayton Loudspeaker 15". Both cabinets are sealed. I am not a big fan of bass reflex porting.
