I remember when all the appliance/TV shops used to **** about Sears taking all their business, but if they needed any tools to do their job with, it was Craftsman to the rescue. Why???, because they were good for a lifetime and cheaper than the stuff from the tool guys in the trucks.

BTW, CRboy, don't worry, Walmart may have bought up your little market in Costa Rica, but China is their ultimate market target. 5 billion people with more money than they have ever had.

... and they are well on their way in China.

I shop Wal-Mart often. Rx's and OTC drugs, socks, jeans, lawn products, etc., etc. And my super Wal-Mart also carries great fresh meats, fish, and their store brand "Great Value" products are the equal of whatever name brand I've found to be best... across the entire food spectrum often at half the price of the name brand.

Great prices... great selection. Clean stores, friendly staff. None of whom are there serving a forced labor sentence. I think I'll go back.
    More later,
    Tour...

I think Walmart is going to be a "benefit" here more than anything else, we don't have ANY stores like them, Walmart carries a lot of stuff/brands that are not available here so hopefully they will bring new stuff (we're way behind in technology), maybe not better but newer for sure... I don't know if they're going to remodel all the stores or what.......

5 quarts of Mobil 1 for 20 bucks...Hell yess I love Wal Mart!!

I've also priced out things like groceries, socks, plants, and stuff like that, and Wal Mart is always about 75% of the cost of any other place...except for Blue Bell ice cream - I never find that shite cheap at Wal Mart...

He had worked for Walmart for years and they fired him when he started showing off his picture of himself. I doubt if he knew any better.

I hate McDonalds. Just think about all the mom and pop restaurants that were put out of business by McDonalds and their cheap hamburgers. And do you know how little McD's pays their employees? My God, they pay like $6/hr! How can anyone be expected to support a family of 4 on $6/hr?! I mean yeah I couldnt live on that so I had to get a job that pays more but who am I to tell somebody they shouldnt be trying to support 6 kids on minimum wage! Keep your laws off my body! Save the trees! Nuclear arms cant hug a child!

omg......can we say Moooolenium Crunch.......GOOOOD stuff right there.....

There are a TON of places that pay less than Wal-Mart, so the arguement that they don't pay enough doesn't hold water. I do understand from the aspect of governmental subsidies; however, the people to be held responsible are not working at Wal-Mart........they're your politicians that sign off on that stuff.....period.

Walmart is great for the economy. They give us stuff really cheap and create a ton of jobs. Yes local shops suffer because us consumers refuse to support them but 100 years ago there was a thriving buggy whip business going on. Times change.

I actually agree with your entire post, Mac, so I don't know why I'm even bothering to post this, but it has been shown through numerous studies that Walmart actually hurts almost every local economy that it enters into. I don't remember why or how to be completely honest, nor do I care - that's how the system works, and if the economies are hurt that badly then Walmart will eventually be put out of businesss by other better alternatives - but it's just something I remember.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Oh no, my brother. When a new Walmart comes to town, they usually do so with several hundred jobs just in the Walmart. On top of that, Ill give you a dollar for any Walmart SuperCenter you can find that doesnt have some sort of strip mall attatched to it. Not only are those creating new jobs and a bigger tax base but a lot of them are privately owned businesses, i.e. mom and pop shops!

Take the one that opened up outside of Chicago. The panty waists in Chicago wouldnt let Walmart build inside their city limits so they went down like 3 blocks to the neighboring city and built one there. Within a week they had several THOUSAND applications for jobs!

Most Wal-Mart jobs aren't meant to be careers. They have decent wages for many part timer's in need or work (students, retiree's, mom, between jobbers, etc.)

Do you think the other stores that sell the same products as Wal-Mart have better wages or treat people and different?

They have good products at good prices, have a great return policy, are open all hours, etc. If you don't like them, don't shop there.

The vast number of Wal-Mart stock holders are not rich people. If you have a pension plan with your company, or have mutual funds of some sort, you own a piece of Wal-Mart.

Walmart is fine by me. They do what they do very well. Since when is it wrong to be VERY sucessful? I shop there and I support them. If it wasn't Walmart, it would be another company. They just happen to be the biggest and the best at what they do.

If you'll make it $5 a pop I'll take you up on that one. I know of at least 4 in my general vicinity that are (for the time being) sitting there all by themselves.

I'm all over the map on this argument. First, I live in NW Arkansas, right here in "Walmart-ville". I generally dislike shopping at Walmart, mostly because about 90% of the "non-food" items they carry are absolute junk (that's less Walmart's problem than it is those people who continue to buy the junk, however). I end up shopping there quite a bit, because in the rural town where I live, they're often the ONLY place to get stuff without driving 30 miles. (The ones we used to have went out of business, but those places DID cost more, and my income is nothing to get excited about, after all)

I've never worked at walmart, but I know plenty of people who have. I've rarely heard anyone complain about working conditions/wages/benefits- Probably because Walmart pays just as well as any other unskilled labor position that one could get without having to drive 30 miles.

I own some Walmart stock. It went a long way toward helping me buy the house I bought 3 years ago.

My Dad manages a business that could call Walmart a competitor, albeit on a very limited range of products. People that buy these items from his store instead of Wal-Mart pay more, but do so willingly to get better quality (smart consumers).

I also personally know someone whose small, niche-market, business was obviously and on-purpose, driven out of business by Wal-Mart.

So, yeah, I'm on all sides of this one. One thing though: Like 'em or not, I don't think they're going away. They got as big as they are by giving people what they want.

I like WalMart for the little things. Get the **** and other toiletries there. On occasion I will buy a few DVDs and such.

For the large ticket items I tend to go elsewhere because I want to support the smaller specialty stores where I get service beyond the sale. I have absolutely no problem with WalMart, and they are exactly what capitalism is all about. I am 100% on board with what Troy has said here.

With all the success stories of business, failure can and does happen. If it wasn't WalMart it would be someone else. There's always a finger to point for someone elses misfortune. People need to find their niche if they want to earn their place in the market.

Target, for example is doing very well. If WalMart is killing all of these businesses why does Target have so much staying power?

The only problem I have with WalMart is how they strongarm their suppliers. Some of what I know they do borders on bad business ethics, but thems the breaks in the business world.
