This is a 1993 movie that was just released on DVD. Netflix and Blockbuster have it available now. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108327/
The main stars are River Phoenix, Samantha Mathis, Dermot Mulroney, and Sandra Bullock. Although this is not super early in any of their acting careers, I found watching their performances refreshing. It's a sappy love story but not all that bad of a movie.
I've watched this movie several times on laser disc just for the singing. The actors actually sing several times in this film and are fun to watch together. Unfortunately the seperate soundtrack on CD and cassette does not have the actor's singing, only the original authors.
Another fun thing is the motel manager has a sign out front like the sign generator we've seen posted here on the forum. He puts up a different message each day.
River and Samantha were dating and according to IMDB, River's date the night he died ouside Johnny Depp's club was Samantha. That must have been really depressing for her. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000203/bio
