Paradigm pw-2200
Hi:
Looking at replacing my crappy PolkPS10 sub with a Paradigm PW-2200. Works out better than an SVS for me because:
1) The cost of shipping that thing to Canada is riddiculus. $70-$100 shipping, $50-$70 brokerage fee and then add 14% tax to the top. Then convert the price to Canadian pessos (which is alot better then last year but still...). Can anyone say gulp?
2) I can get the sub for $800-$850 Can from a local authorized retailer (gotta have that warranty) and they say the retail is $1200 Can. True or not? I don't know as Paradigm does not give MSRP on their website.
So I was thinking of an SVS I or + cylinder sub but shipping just makes it stupid.
Anyway I was wondering how good the sub truly is in the low end? It says on the specs that it can go to 18hz but what kind of db is it at for that? Not saying that I need it to get really loud but since I have my home theater in a basement with 12" thick cement floor it makes my current 10" very laughable. Anyone have some good solid facts on this? My Monitor 60s don't have great low end and I am despert for that "punch you in the chest" feel.

Being a fellow Canuck from AB, I feel your pain, but 7% less fortunately. Seriously, I purchased two PC-Ultra’s when they were first introduced when the exchange rate was less favorable. Even with the price in CDN, I still have no regrets purchasing these subs and having them delivered to my door.
I had looked at all the local offerings in town and could not find a subwoofer I would use for two channel listening. As a last resort, I ordered the PCU’s and awaited delivery. After delivery, I looked at the local offerings once again to determine if I should keep the PCU’s or take advantage of the 45 day money back guarantee. They are still in my system and will not be going anywhere.
Try to find some one who has a SVS so you can hear them. If you are in southern AB in your travels, let me know so we can arrange a demo. -

Pdigm makes KICK **** subwoofers! Anything over the PDR line IMO are excellent performers. If I were in your situation, I would go Pdigm over SVS for the same reasons you stated. The border charges (if there's any) will kill you and shipping will be very expensive. Pdigm is Canadian so you can get them at great prices.
I haven't heard the 2200 but the store I worked at in the summer had the Seismic series and Servo 15. The Servo 15 is my dream sub. Can't remember how much the retail price was but the PW2200 is one of their higher end sub.
The "punch you in the chest" feel you described is not material in the very low frequencies but actually located around 60 to 80Hz. So you'd want a sub that can put out clean and high spl in this frequency range. This is what Dr. Spec (former Club Polk member) told me. The guy knew everything there is to know about subs. You can do a search for his old posts. Anybody know what happened to him?

You guys already have a perfectly good subwoofer maker with Paradigm(Canadian). True(subjective) that Svs top line models are a little better below the 18hz in db. But Svs models tend to be on the bulky and heavy side compared to Paradigm's offerings.Gear: Rotel RC 1082, Rotel RSP 1068 pre/pro, Rotel RMB1077 amp, Cayin CDT 15a CD player, S301 bluray.
Speakers: Tannoy DC sensys speakers, Paradigm Servo15 Sub, Velo Spl-1500r
Conditioner: Isotek -
I just purchased the PW2200 last Wednesday and I love it. I was also considering purchasing a SVS but with all the added cost I thought I would have a look at the Paradigm subs. My room is 16ft x 17ft with a sloped ceiling starting at 9ft up to 14ft and this sub can rattle the room very well. This is my first sub so I don't have much knowledge about subs but I know that this sub gives me all the bass that I will ever need and more. I don't know what effect your basement floor would have on it's performance but I am very happy with my purchase so far. The price on the sub was $999 but I got it for $850.Polk RTi 8's

I just recieved my axiom ep500 and it blows the pdr12 away. I gave my neighbor my pdr 12 and he carried it accross the street. the EP500 I had to slide across my room it's 85 lbs. I highly recommend it. I studied subwoofer for 2 months and finally decided on the ep500. The svs ultra was my other pick and I'm sure it's every bit as good. Also the Hsu's got alot of great reviews.

I've got a pair of 2200's in my system for a few years now. I have a basement HT with a concrete floor also. Still get plenty of bass. The max or average(can't remember which)spl is actually higher than the servo 15. I think the reason is that the 15 has the servo, which controls the driver better, and keeps distortion lower. I believe the 15 to be a more musical sub though. There is a list (Tom Nousaine) that compares different subs. I think it was on the home theater forum.I think this is it.

Budy of mine told me to go with the PS instead of the PW. Anybody compared both? Told me that the PS fills the room better although it dosenot go as loud.Current Setup:
