iTunes/iPod questions........

I just recently got a 60gb Video iPod and have been trying to acclimate myself with iTunes, but have a few questions on some things:
1. Is the song/artist/track information that shows in iTunes the ID3 tag information or is it the File Name information that shows up in Windows Explorer.
1a. If I change the information to the individual fields in iTunes, is it only adjusting the iTunes display or is it changing the ID3 info within Explorer.
1b. Why are some tracks not able to be modified? When I click on some songs, I can't alter any of the fields. There are some songs that have an exclamation mark in a gray circle (no original file can be found.....blah blah blah), but the songs I'm not able to alter don't have the exclamation mark near them. Those files I can't play or do anything with because of the original file message.
2. When I connect the iPod to my laptop, it automatically starts up iTunes and starts a download. Is it going to upload the entier iTunes directory of music every time I connect it or is it just doing a quick scan to add the files that were not on the computer as of the last sync?
3. Can you not set a song to Repeat or do I have to constantly hit the back button.....(irritating)
That's about it for now......lol......
Thank you for helping peeps.........

here is all you want to know.... http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa?categoryID=1
Remember, itunes sux. You want to have a complete copy of all your mp3's somewhere that has nothing to do with itunes. That is your master library and backup. iTunes is designed to keep you from moving/copying mp3's from person to person. If your hard drive crashes with your mp3's on it don't think you can just copy them from your ipod back to your pc. There are a few 3rd party utilitis that can help but the songs won't be grouped anymore by album or artist.
It sounds like you have your iPod on syncronize. Bad idea. Put it on manual. If its on sync, every time u plug in it syncs your iPod to your library. NEVER NEVER NEVER plug your iPod into any other pc unless you are ready to lose all the songs on it. If u install itunes on a pc and plug your ipod into it it will remove the songs off it.
Always have all your mp3's stored away from itunes and you can always reinstall your songs. Thats the key thing to remember. No Kids Allowed

Ther'es a lot of free third party apps that will let you interface with your iPod without ever touching iTunes. If / when I ever get an iPod that's the route I'd go.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

what are the apps im curious??

Winamp has an app, but I use Winamp Pro. Well worth the money, and you never have to re-buy it.

I don't know, I don't own an iPod so never seriously looked into them, I've just heard them mentioned in various forms. Google is your friend. If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

iTunes does not limit what you do with files that you bring in from CD or other random mp3 files etc. Only iTunes downloads have Digital Rights Management.
My work PC has itunes on it, but with no library (i only use it for internet radio). It asks if i want to erase what's on my iPod when i plug it in to charge, and I say no. The iPod files remain untouched. If I did manage to erase the iPod's contents, I'd just reload it from my home computer. -
Yeah, I guess I don't have this problem because I don't download much music. It's pretty much all from CDs that I have ripped to my hard drive.

This is a cool app that will rename and redo your ID3 tags from info it gets off Amazon. It will even tag the mp3's with album art.

I've got a question about this subject...I just got a new computer and am in the process of uploading my entire CD collection to it via iTunes. Now I'm worried about the way that iTunes saved the music. My girlfriend has an iPod mini that she uses for her music, whereas I've got an MP3 player in my car radio. I would like to back-up all of my music onto CD's as MP3's but I can no longer do this with iTunes since they're all saved as .aac/MP4. Can I use any available software to make the conversion to MP3 so that my CD player will read the discs? If I do this, what about her iPod? I don't want to have the same music files on the computer in two different formats.
Thanks,
