What kind of speakers are these? I see an awful lot of them for sale brand new in the box. Are they not up to standard?

They are a good intro speaker, you won't find a better speaker for the price

What about bass response? I have a pair of 5b's, will they overshadow the R30's?

A lot of them are on sale brand new in the box, because folks buy them at Fry's really cheaply ($80/pair) then turn around and re-sell them on eBay. -
The R-30's are very good speakers FOR THE PRICE. limited bass...but sounds clean. The quality of all Polk speakers is present. Clean sound. Great for intro. My current new system (step by step )

R30s: Great sound to cost ratio. For the prices they are going for, it will be difficult to find something better, especially in retail stores.
They image well and have clear, non-fatiguing mids/highs. The bass response is good also. However, don't think you can play these speakers loud with heavy bass music; since their lower 3db freq response is only 55Hz, they will need a sub to handle the low freqs.
They sound well when playing both music and movies.
For me, the R30s do very well crossed over at 80hz in my living room.Receiver: harmankardon AVR235
