I like the way my polks look with out the grill. so i wanted to know if i take them off would it damage the speakers or wear the woofers down . basically would it compromise the longevity of my speakers? if not ill take them off and feel comfortable doing so . i dont have any kids or animals or anything like that. just normal living conditions

The grills are only there to protect from things like fingers, flying objects and dust. You would be perfectly fine to take them off and not worry about the longevity of them. I would just dust them every so often to keep down on the dust build up.

I don't really have much to add, except to say that on the RT55i's, the tweeter dome is VERY close to touching the grille--- So the grille provides little or no protection from fingers, bumps, etc. At least with it off, you can see where NOT to touch.

I think the main reason grills exist is aesthetics..
Also it goes along with the idea, out of site out of mind...
Kids dont see it - kids dont touch it.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I would not take the grills off as the air turbulance will wear out the drivers faster and increase the frequency response. As you know the grills are there to reduce the speed of sound.

Another thing...
No cloth is 100% transparent...
With that said, cloth in generally dampens the tweeter at around 13khz ---- and some manufacturers will boost this area to compensate for that. So sometimes, a speaker will sound better with the grill on.
Also, sometimes a manufacturer will design a speaker with the fact the grill IS on -- so sometimes it will sound way off when the grill is off. Sometime it will sound better.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.
