Putting center channel in-wall?

Can I put a CSi3 or similiar center channel in a wall? I know it's not meant for mounting but if I were to make a hole and small shelf recessed in the wall would it sound OK in there or would that drastically change the sound? It would be going above a mantle only about 5 inches deep and I dont want it hanging off the front. The only other option would be a shelf about 2'-3 feet to the right of the TV and about 2 feet below and I'm afraid this wont sound/look right when watching TV/movies. Thanks.

I would say, since it isn't back ported, if you left it an inch or so beyond the plane of the wall, it should sound o.k. . I wouldn't recess it behind the plane of the wall surface though or you'll interfere with the projection of the drivers.

I think it would sound weird with the ports in the wall. Maybe boomy or you might loose bass response.

Definitly NOT !!!! You gotta loose all bass response if you put the central in a wall !!!! Better on TV :D

The CSi3 is front ported, it won't be affected as long as the drivers aren't below the plane of the wall.

Did you consider an RM302 instead? This way you can wall mount it under your screen.

Sould be ok the way you've got it illustrated- just get the front about even with the TV. If it sounds sloppy, try stuffing dacron (or any dampening material) around it.

Since the CSi3 is wider than normal stud spacing you will probably have to cut a large notch out of the stud. And since your televison is using those same studs as support, it is probably going to be weekened.

Of course, it may not make that big of a difference, and you might not be cutting that much through the stud, so my caution may not be valid.
Also, your walls at that point may use 2 x 6's, so cutting a couple inches out of them won't be a big deal.

Your other option might be to use a Polk TC series in-wall speaker instead.

Yeah, I know theres some weird stuff behind there as far as studs go. Theres also a large, at least 2x6, horizontal piece running across the top of the mantle behind the wall that would have to be cut. I think above the TV may be too high so I'll look at the RM302/202 and see about putting it on the mantle (ewww). Thanks for all the input guys.
