Subwoofer what should I be Listining for?

When placing and setting up my sub what should I be listing for? Prior to using a spl meter and my test tones (I will be receiving my Avia disk tomorrow) I had my sub turned up much higher then I have it know and it seemed like it was very boomy and I was hearing bass when I shouldnt especially while watching cable. After setting my sub with the meter it definitely sounds a lot cleaner but I don't get the rumple I used to during movies. I watched The Island last night and while the bass sounded very clean I never had any rumble. Do I need to turn the volume up on my receiver close to where I had it when I calibrated my system? I have three kids so watching movies at night I cant crank up the system or my wife will shoot me. I know part of my problem is the sub itself and when I purchase a svs sub it will be a whole new world. I assume when I upgrade my sub I will get both the rumble and clean bass I am looking for. I think my biggest problem is I am just not sure what it should sound like if it is setup correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated on this subject. I have read many articles on setting up subs but none really talk about what kind of sound you should be looking for. Thank you for your help.

My advise is to click the Education TAB in this site and open/ download the HT guide handbook. This will give you the detail directions on how to set up your Sub.....Good luck.

You want rumble, huh? OK, what is your room size? The reason I ask is because a small sub in a large room ain't gonna rumble, so you need to make sure your sub is appropriately sized for the room. Generally, ported subs work best for rumblin'. So make sure you order the correct sized SVS.
Next, you gotta check placement. The rumble quotient is higher when the sub is next to the seating position, but you have to determine if that's a good spot for it. Lots of info on the 'net about this issue -- just google "subwoofer placement" or search it here on this forum.
Next, you already have the goods to dial in your sub in properly -- SPL meter, Avia disk, etc., so you should be OK here.
Don't worry about not knowing how the sub should sound if set up properly. Your ears will tell you. It'll sound like the opposite of boomy, and it appears that you know quite well how "boominess" sounds.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Define Rumble please.
the kind of rumble you get from bypassing your sub's crossover? -
Thank you for your help. I am currently using a JVC 10' 110watt ported sub. I will be upgrading when I have the money to a SVS 20-39 which I no will make a world of difference. My room is 25X10 with 8' ceilings and can be completely closed in My listening postion is 13' from the TV. I am very limited as to where I can place the sub due to the fact that it is in my family room. My one wall has 3 big windows and if I place the sub in the corner the windows rattle. My other wall is also one of my kid’s bedroom walls so I can't place it there. I have found that between my right front speaker and TV is my best option and the sub seems to blend well. After calibrating I am definitely happier as a whole but have noticed during DVD movies it needs a little more bass. I watched Deep Impact last night and turned the volume up a little on the sub and it sounded good. I should be getting my AVIA DVD today so I will see how it sounds after calibrating my system. Thank you again I really appreciate the help. .Polk Monitor 50's (fronts)
