Speaker calibration help?

I am finally going to try and calibrate my speakers. I picked up an analog spl meter. My JVC receiver (which I will be replacing soon) only allows me to adjust the speaker levels for the center and surround left and right. Will this be a problem? I assume I will have to set the level for the center and surround speakers to match the fronts. I also want to calibrate my sub JVC 10’ 110w (which I will also be replacing soon). I have a volume control on the sub and I can adjust the sub level on the receiver from -10db to +10db. Do I set the volume level on the sub to the normal listening level and then use the receiver to have it match the speaker. Is this correct? I don’t have Avia or any other setup cd so I will have to use the test tones from the receiver. I have Star Wars DVD which has test tones on the DVD. Which would be better to use? Any other info you can give me to help would be greatly appreciated. I have no clue what I am doing? Thank you and thank God for this forum

I forgot to mention that my receiver does not send a test tone to the Sub. If I remember correctly the one on the Star Wars DVD does but I don't think it sends a pink noise. Is there anything I can do? I plan on getting the Avia DVD in the future which I am sure will help but i would like to make do with what i have for now. Is there something I can download and burn to cd to calibrate the sub? Thank you for your help i really appreciate it.

Check the receiver manual, it will tell you what level it's built-in tones are designed to be calibrated to.

Take your loudest of the main channel speakers, non-sub, set it's receiver trim level to 0db, run the main volume of the receiver up until you get the calibration level on the db meter at your listening position. Then adjust the other speakers using the level trims to match up.

For the sub shoot for -2db or so on the receiver trim level and see if the sub gain itself will get it to calibration level. Leave yourself some room for a clean signal from the receiver and room to adjust the sub level with the receiver remote a few db's for different sources...e.g. music, movies etc.
