In keeping with the plea for more music discussion.. :p

"Etc." can include whatever you want it to... Reggae, Classical, Country, New Age, Bagpipe, German Folk... but please, no disco... :D

Give it some thought and try to come up with one, and only one, work from each category, if you can.

Pick a genre'... or two... or three... or...
Make your pick in each.

Rock
The Hollies - Long Cool Woman
Toughie here for me. Toss up between the above and The Zombies' Time of the Season, but that great guitar lick intro tips me in favor of my winner. This in spite of fact that I still try to call it "Tall Cool Woman 9 times out of 10 and that until moments ago I never could understand one section of the lyrics.

Namely:
Well I told her, "Don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared"
Well I'm gonna be forgiven
If I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress

Blues
SRV's "Texas Flood"
Probably alot easier genre' for me to pick than it will be for BDMP. Just love this track. But as good as the studio version is, you need to hear the live performance at the Montreaux Blues festival. His Austin City Limits performance of it is a close second.

Jazz
The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Blue Rondo
Not all that well versed with jazz, but the above works for me. Paul Desmond's alto sax work is so fine...

Classical
Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Reiner and the Chicago SO's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto
Arguably the greatest violinist of all time (sorry Perlman, Stern, et al) tackling without a doubt the most demanding violin concerto of all time. Power, precision, tenderness all in one piece. Effin-fantastic...
More later,
Tour...
Vox Copuli
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. - Old English Proverb

"Death doesn't come with a Uhaul." - Dennis Gardner

"It's easy to get lost in price vs performance vs ego vs illusion." - doro
"There is a certain entertainment value in ripping the occaisonal (sic) buttmunch..." - TroyD

Tour - this is a really great idea and an incredibly tough choice. Unfortunately there are so many in each category I figured the idea is to put out some of my ideas of the quintessential tracks and learn from others choices so here goes (i.e. even though I wanted to name about five for each category):

Rock = Fire - Jimi Hendrix - and incredible, ripping fast guitar blast. One of my all time favorites.

Blues = Lay Down Sally - Eric Clapton - one of the coolest little blues licks around. The guitar going on in the background will just amaze you if you take the time to listen instead of blowing this off as a pop song. Clapton at his inventive best.

Jazz - (Very tough) = Sunday Night Meeting - Charles Mingus - just... wow. I'm a big Chet Baker fan but it just doesn't have the power of Mingus.

Classical - Appalachin Spring - Aaron Copeland - this is a great and varied but not too long symphony that reminds me of cowboy movies for some reason....

    I'm adding:

Punk = Holiday in Cambodia - Dead Kennedys - (could easily be California Uber Allies). A punk classic and one of the great, varied offerings from a genre that is not supposed to be able to produce complex music.

Progressive = Tempus Fugit - Yes - what can I say. Just one of my favorite tracks and I had to work it in here somehow...

Looking forward to some other tracks to check out!

I'm absolutely torn on these two Genre:
    Artist Album Track
Jazz: Getz/Gilberto "Getz/Gilberto" "The Girl from Ipanema"
    George Benson "Breezin'" "Masquerade"
TGFI has all that spontaneous ,thrown together and clicks vibe going for it while Masquerade has to be one of the smoothest sounding tunes out there.

Classical: Mehta/LA Phil. Strauss "Alpine Symphony"
    Ormandy/Reiner Strauss "Also Sprach Zarathustra"

Both pieces have all the nuances you could ask for plus tha big waves of sound be it the strings or whole orchestra at times

    I can't pick just one!!!!!

Dark Side of the Moon is one of the worst albums ever released. It stayed on the charts because a few different generations have now smoked their brains out while listening to it. PB&J is also comparable to filet mignon among the grogged up, and a lava lamp is the ceiling of The Sistine Chapel.

THAT'S what THAT rock legend is all about.

A quote comes to mind: (paraphrasing) "No matter what you say around here, someone will be along shortly to tell you you don't know what you're talking about."

Rock - Heartbreaker - Led Zep
Blues - SRV - Tin Pan Alley
Jazz - Miles Davis - Blue in Green
Prog - Yes - South Side of the Sky (and I too love "Tempus Fugit", Mrbuhl...one of the best bass lines ever)
Alt. Rock - The Pixies - Gouge Away also The Smiths - How Soon is Now?
Classical - Well, I'm sure there is a definitive Symphonic arrangement of Bach's Tocatta Fugue in D Minor (normally an organ piece)...but I don't own it. But that is my favorite piece of classical music

Blues _ How do I pick one?

Albert Collins - Ice Pickin' - Cold, Cold Feeling

Albert had such a unique attack on the guitar string

Muddy Waters - Hard Again - Mannish Boy

Muddy Waters - Hard Again - I Can't Be Satisfied ( Johnny Winter plays the National Steel guitar on this track)

BB King - Live at the Cook County Jail - How Blue can you get?

I may get flak for this one:

George Thorogood & the Destroyers - George Thorogood & the Destroyers - Madison Blues and also Kind-hearted woman

And of Course, all of the Robert Johnson recordings!

You can always tell the people who are just starting to get into mainstream jazz. Time Out and Kind of Blue are ALWAYS their top jazz picks.

Dig deeper fellows, there's a lot more there.

In 3 1/2 minutes, Count Basie and his orchestra DEFINE jazz with "Jumpin' at The Woodside".

Rock - Jungleland, Springsteen. IMO, represents (albeit far from perfectly) what a great rock song should be.

Blues - Red House; Hendrix (although there was a version with Eric Johnson and others that is cool)

Jazz - limited exposure but The Bridge by Sonny Rollins is my fave so far

Classical - oooh, so much good stuff here. Right now, I'm going with Vivaldi and the 4 seasons.

Rock - Won't Get Fooled Again, The Who. I just got some Who material on CD, so this one is on my mind. But it's got it all, great drumming, loud guitar, busy bass, and a SCREAM to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Blues - Sorry guys, pick one, they all sound the same to me.

Jazz - I'm gonna feel like a noob now after George's comment, but come on, Take Five. Can't beat it.

Classical - one of my favorites is Pictures at an Exhibitionby Mussorgsky.

New Genre: Silly Man's Jazz - anything by Zappa ;)

Iv'e read and reread Tour admonition and hope I am posting in spirit of the thread.( and I am ready to get flamed for daring to mention a country artist)

Country: Merle Haggard- Ramblin Fever. His everyday common man themes I find resonating within as I get older and look back on life a little more.
for ex. .......If someone ever told you I gave a damn they damn sure told you wrong I've had rambling fever all along.................................I wanna die along the highway and rot away like some old highline pole, restless ramblin fever in my soul.................

Rock: George Thorogood- One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer.

.....Everybody funny, now you funny too.........

Thats poetry for the common man IMO

    Rock--HEART--TRACK--ALONE

Soft linen, white skin, perfume on my wrist.

Yousa. Ms. Wilson hangs it all out on this track with her vocals, shivers up the back ballad.

Bluegrass--Alison Krause and Union Station--When you Say Nothing at All

Pitch Perfect with just enough Picking

seems all you are doing telling other why thier lists are wrong.wheres yours? give us all a chance for rebuttal ..If I remember right you are a big Zappa fan..so am I ..but will be the first to admit he has released his share of crap as well. I have listened to Dark Side since its release day and have never smoked dope while listening to it..its an excellent album but I think Meddle is better
