I personally like their claim of "Precise imaging and separation ". I suppose that's possible if you set it at ear level 1 foot in front of your head.

I think you would be better off with a Tivoli Model Two where the speakers can be separated. Of course ther is still the compression of the mp3 files....

    Pod-Fi ?

I won't let the significant other even wave that thing near my gear. I see her eye-ing the input jacks too. Nope, nope.

Actually I have played around with using my iPod on my 2ch system and loss-less encoding and was quite shocked how good it sounded. In a blind test I'm not certain I could tell it apart from the disc.

But that speaker/dock thing is a joke.

I can tell the difference for sure from the CD when I hook up the IPOD to my pre but it is nice enough for parties or background music and it goes on forever.

Were you using the standard MP3/AAC compression or the loss-less?

On MP3 and AAC it's easy to hear the difference. But I find loss-less to be quite impressive.

cmy330go - Have you seen Red Wine Audio's mod for the iPod? They say the fourth generation iPod (previos gen) has a very good Wolfson DAC, and so the eliminate a lot of unneeded wiring. He basically makes it point-to-point from HD, to DAC, to line out. The headphone jack no longer has a variable output so it requires an external amp, but I've read that it sounds amazing with the iMod.

Thanks for the link Audiobliss! That is the iPod I currently have and might have to do the mod after getting the new video model.

    Thanks Again!

iPod's and other portables certainly have their place and coolness factor. But to try to market it as Hi-Fi is just plain stupid. It is what it is.....a portable music player, which is not audiophile grade. All these docking stations/powered speakers certainly can be used for various situations as convienence, etc. But a portable should never be considered a serious stereo component, modded or unmodded.

I was using lossless and some of them were wav files. The sound is just somewhat more 'canned' sounding. The soundstage and detail are not as good and there is not as much of a sense of air or spaciousness. It is fine though and I love it for my car system but if I were to really sit for a listening session ,I would not use the IPOD.

All I know is that Steve Jobs commented that the PodFi is replacing his home speakers...

Yeah.... his speakers are Wilson Watt/Puppies.... no way the PodFi is replacing a 20K pair of speakers. Stupid little white piece of garbage.
