I just checked the dell outlet (only because that link was above), and they have a P4 3.0 with 1gig ram, 250g drive, 16x dbl layer dvd, xp, office pro, + a bunch of other crap for $1,189. Not a bad deal if you ask me.
I'm not hip on thier support either these days (it really kind of sucks), but you really can't beat the price, and the you can always return it.Denon AVR-3803

I went into Best Buy and CompUSA at lunch. Seems most of these guys are about the same price as Dell. Some of the instore ones I looked at came with the AMD64 processor which seems to be the one of choice over Intel. I was told they run faster and cooler.
After seeing the prices about the only reason I'd go with Dell now is the in home warranty service, but if it's crap is it worth it, or should I just head over the a B&M and pick one up off the shelf?If...

The AMD chips do run cooler than the Intel's. As far as speed, they are neck and neck for the most part, with some AMD's coming out on top and vice versa. For gaming, AMD's do a better job than Intel. Price wise, AMD chips are cheaper which cuts down on system price (obviously).
Make sure the BB & Compusa systems are on-par with HD size and type (SATA being the newest type), RAM (speed of RAM), Video card (type and amount of RAM), DVD burner, software included, warranty, etc...
I personally love Dell's flat panel monitors. The 19" & 20" Widescreen consistantly get some of the highest ratings (resolution and color accuracy). If you go Dell, make sure the monitor is an Ultrasharp. I have the 19" which is awesome!
Good luck!No excuses! -
I just got the 19" digital flat panel monitor from Dell too, and it's bad-****! It's got a nicer picture than my television! I bought a Dimension E-510 with dbl. layer DVD/CD burner, 1 GB Ram, 80 GB HD + a bunch of other stuff last week for >$1000. I also received it three days after placing the order online."I got into the music business thinking it was really radical, that it wasn't really a business at all, that it was a lot of people being artistic and creative. Not true, and it made me very depressed."

Whoops, service.
Yeah, Dell can be a pain in the **** alot of times. I have only dealt with them from the corporate system gold support apsect. We get a person in the US. I understand home users get someone in Curry Powder Land!
Again, from dealing with them for 2 years, I know what to tell them for the most part. "Yeah, i've done this, this, this and this. Oh yeah, i've done this and this also." 90% of the time, they have no more standard troubleshooting questions in their database and send either the part or a technician out next day.
They have a standard list of troubleshooting questions to go through. Sometimes it involves opening the PC up and troubleshooting hardware while they talk you through it. The real annoyance would be for users not having any knowledge whatsoever on how to open a PC and know what they are looking at. Then to deal with the Curry Powder Legion whom you can barely understand would top it off. Alot of them, you might as well be trying to understand the teacher from Charlie Brown! "WAAAA WAAA WAAAA...."No excuses! -
I'm leaning more towards buying one off the shelf at CompUSA or Best Buy. If it goes down I'll just drop it off and walk away and come back when it's done. Not sure yet though, my brain is on information overload. Need a big beer and some processing time now.If...

COOL!!!! My pleasure, enjoy!!!:)Ron-P wrote:Did that yesterday Cathy, PCclub.com. Took my neighbor with me, they've built 3 computers for him and he has been very happy. I told them what I was looking for and what I'll be using it for, it rolled in at just over $1,600. A few hundered bucks less then Dell and a better machine. A 3.2 GHz machine, 1 meg of ram, 160 gig hard drive, a 17" LCD display, and a photo quality Epson printer and I upgraded the mouse, keyboard, sound system and a few other basics.
