best sub under $1000.00

I would like to buy a subwoofer for home.
Need some choices with great musical sound in mind..
I just purchased Polk mmc525 because of great advise from this site.
Front speakers are B&W 703s.

Thanks for the help..

I don't want to violate any rules; but just about every review I have seen seems to highly recommend either the SVS line or the HSU line. And I just bought the SVS 20-39CS used, but have not received it yet. However, in order to get the price, I had to buy both. I just put the other up for sale in the flea market. I'll let you know how I feel about it when I set it up.

I really like my SVS 25-39+. (cs (passive) version) For under 1k I would say the SVS PC-Ultra would be very hard to beat. (would be used and with shipping would be close to your 1k mark)

That would be if you are going on musicality and slam (not looks). There are alot of subwoofers sexier than the SVS cylinders, but few better when you close your eyes. Especially for the price.

I am in flyover land and haven't heard many of the offerings but I doubt they would blow away my homebuilt. A closeout Avelanche 18 with a PE 1000 watt plate in a 7.5 ft sealed lightly stuffed enclosure. While that particular driver is no longer available you could do an awsome sub for the money if you don't mind the DIY aspect. I'm not saying it is for everyone - just another option.

    Bowlman,

Do yourself a favor and check out the Grotto from Martin Logan. Small, compact, good-looking sub (triangular, not a big box), but with great extension and heft, not to mention tight, accurate, musical bass. Retails for $1000, but there are usually one or two floating around on Ebay or Audiogon. Just type Martin Logan or Grotto in search field and a few should pop up. They go from $600-800 used and in good condition. Excellent subs, and they won't take over a room. Much better than SVS and HSU in my opinion. Great for music and theater. And, unlike the internet based companies, you can actually go into a store and listen to the Grotto before purchasing.

Check it out on the ML website here: http://www.martinlogan.com/grotto_speaker.html
There should be local high-end dealers near you, or a Magnolia Home Theater inside of Best Buy should have one on display.
    Current System:

Mitsubishi 30" LCD LT-3020 (for sale**)
Vienna Acoustics Beethoven Concert Grand (Rosewood)-Mains (with Audioquest Mont Blanc cables)
    CSi5-Center (for sale**)
    FXi3-surrounds (for sale**)
    Martin Logan Depth-Sub
    B&K AVR 507
    Pimare CD21-CD Player
    Denon 1815-DVD Player
    Panamax M5500-EX-Line Conditioner

    I can build you one...

But just be aware that it will cost alot to ship a large scale subwoofer.

If you want to go down this path or want to see what itll be - send me an email at vr3mxdmicblce2k7@gmail.com

You can see some I have built by clicking on the link below my post here...

    Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
    DAC: Arcam irDac
    Source: iMac
    Remote Control: iPad Mini

    3.2 Home Theater Setup:

    Fronts: Klipsch RP-160M
    Center: Klipsch RP-160M
    Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
    AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030
    Blu Ray: Sony BDP-S790

I finally got a chance to check out an infinate baffle setup. Jaw dropping. For 1000 or less, if you have the room and skills, you can build a sub that will blow away anything in a box. I just got my drivers, the walls will come down soon.:D

The best sub for under a grand is the one you build your self.
    Harman Kardon AVR635
    RTi10's Up Front
    CSi5 Center
    RTi6's Rear Surround
    Furman RA-1210:rolleyes:

I paid $400 each for two used PSW 1200's. I split my LFE out, and put a sub under each front speaker. I think you might describe the bass as "effortless."
