Vintage receiver clean up help

Hello,

I have a vintage Pioneer and Yamaha receiver that I think need a good cleaning. The both still work excellent, except that whenever you turn up the volume it is REALLY scratchy and the channels kind of fade in and out until you find a "sweet" spot, then all is well. I think I read somewhere that this is caused by dirty contacts? If this is true, can someone point me to a good article on exactly how to solve this problem. I am fairly handy and feel confident I can do it with the proper guidance. Please advise. Thanks!

Regards- Greg

CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

If your comfortable with getting into them with a soildering iron, hit all the solder points with a hot iron. They are known to deteriate which can result in what you are experienceing.Happy soldering!!!

Solder connections fail due to movement or improper soldering in the first place(e.g. cold joint). They just don't "decide" to fail.

Didnt say they (decided to fail). They do fail from time to time for whatever reason and a person can go in there with an iron and clean up any bad connections. All said and done for the few cents it costs to run the soldering iron.Without there being any failure due to parts, this will fix the problem 99 percent of the time-without buying an overprived fix-it-from a sales rep

Like doro said...easy fix. Pop the cover and hit the pots with some electrical contact cleaner. Works like a charm.

Thanks for your replies. I went to Rat Shack after finding a good thread online. Bought a $9 can of contact cleaner, hit both volume knobs and they are both working like a champ. Sweet!!

They fail via fatigue and usage, not by existence.

The touch-up idea, via soldering iron, is solid. I've worked out more than a few issues via soldering iron work.

Glad you got it working, but I'll second the above comment. In the future I would recommend against using the contact cleaner from RS on anything that you actually care about.
