Turntable preamp adjustments

This is a little deep into turntables but I thought it was interesting. On decent TT preamps you normally have gain control, capacitance and resistance loading. One would consider that you set the capacitance and resistance depending upon the cartridge. Not necessarily true! Today I tried a different set of amps and found quite a difference depending upon the amps you use. Unlike CD players you have to actually use your ears and decide what sounds the best. With the Jolida the best settings were 47K ohms resistance and 170 uf capacitance but when I hooked up some Manley monoblocks the optimum settings ended up being 25 ohms and 440uf capacitance going through some MC transformers. Totally different! With the Jolida these settings sucked. With the Manleys, it sings. Just goes to show that some experimentation can totally change your experience. Call me a geek but I'm going to sleep much better tonight!
