Concerned about LFE without a sub

I'm helping a friend at work set up his 1st HT system. Currently he has an Onkyo 602, R30s, R15s, and an old JBL center I had laying around. In a month or 2, he will get a CSi25 and a Dayton sub.

Prior to getting the sub, I'm leary of his running the R30s as "large", which would redirect LFE bass to them. I concerned that the LFE bass would be too much for them, and could potentially damage them.

Is this a valid concern? And, other than running his speakers as "small" with a low crossover with no sub, is there a good way to manage the bass until he gets the sub? I'm also thinking that running Pro Logic may be a decent temporary solution (no LFE).

Thanks,

Adam

You can run the 30's on large, unless they start to **** and bottom out. If a sub is only 60 days out, he can get by for now either way.

    Cheers,

I was in that same boat until I received my R50s and later the subwoofer as well. As Russ already mentioned, you can set to large but be careful with the listening level; don't push them too hard.

push em damn it, push em! set to large.. i'm sure they can handle the bass.. if not. oh well, he'll need new fronts i guess. ;)

Seriously though. if they start to bottom out.. then you'll now they can't handle the volume. Sometimes receivers reach their limits before speakers do.

    Thanks for the input guys.

I'll have him try large and tell him to watch the volume and signs of stress in the R30s.

I would personally like to be there to see those single 6.5"ers jump off the baffle when the LFE hits hard, though. :D

Hook the rear channels into the receivers sub out and everything will work out just nice !!!:D

If the mains start to bottom out when set to large... set them to medium  or small.

When the sub comes in, you may want to experement with setting the mains and centres between medium and small. I have all my speakers set to small so that the sub can get as much bass as possible. You may want to experement the speaker settings while the sub is off, then on to tailor the sound to your liking. If you need to run your speaks with the sub off (such as at night so that you dont disturb the neighbors), you will already have an idea of what you want the speakers set up for night mode. Of course if its a weekend or holiday, you should play your system at concert levels.

    Good luck !!!

I run my bookshelves on large because it simply doesn't matter. I have a subwoofer and the bookends are crossed @ 80Hz.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
