Tivo is a digital recording device that can monitor what you're viewing and what you are replaying. The Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" at last years Super Bowl is still the recordholder for replays with Tivo subscribers.
-
After this years SB Tivo monitored subscribers to see which commerical they reran and watched again, that way they claim to know what was the most popular ad. If Tivo ( which is a CC company, like Carmax ) is going to ask me if they can monitor me and I agree, that's one thing but for them to invade the privacy of my home is another. Screw Tivo, IMHO.

Exactly. That's what Tivo is MARKETED as - something that you can record with, but also as something that REMEMBERS what you like and records shows it THINKS you'll like FOR you. It's part of the product description, I don't see why anyone's surprised. If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Dear Misguided Moron,
I don't have Tivo.

Strange that you ask for an opinion, but when given one, you strike out in anger.
I do not think that any of the people above that answered you are Misguided nor Morons. It takes a fair amount of intelligence to post legibly as well as being able to locate these type of threads and share one's opinion. I believe that more than places them at least one step above moron.
I thoroughly enjoy my DVR ( I know not TIVO but very similar) and would not know how to live without it. If my use of such a device allows manufacturers out there to better determine my likes and dislikes so that they can fashion their companies products to cater to my needs, then I am all for it! I love being catered too and love being waited on.

BTW, "read the fine print and stop yer bitchin" is not an opinion.
It also was not said in a lighthearted or joking manner.
Maybe you're used to people being rude and ignorant to you but I don't like it.
Any questions? -
I've turned off the suggested viewing on my Tivo, so it only records what I want. Only a paranoid person would be concerned with the privacy issue the way they use it. Function: adjective
1 a : destitute of knowledge or education <an ignorant society>; also : lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified <parents ignorant of modern mathematics>
Drummingman was ingorant of TIVO's informed consent policy.
Now. "Read the fine print and stop yer bitchin'" is, in fact, an opinion. TIVO is very transparent in their information ganthering processes and anyone who is even marginally competent is well aware of their practices. If one can't deal with that, then one shoudn't get TIVO. Obviously you were wrong about the above. It was also very bad form to send me a PM trying to express you justification for lashing out at these members and myself.
This is one of the few boards that I have visited where not only are the members civil to each other, but they also contain an impressive array of knowledge with not only Polk gear but all audio gear in general. I highly respect their opinions and suggest that you do as well if you wish to mature in the audio area. Reacting insulted and lashing out at them whenever someone points out an obvious flaw in your research and knowledge is not conducive to building strong relationships nor a good learning environment for you.
I am sorry for you that you cannot enjoy the benefits of digital recorders because of your Big Brother phobia. However extensive research into a person's likes and dislikes only serves to strengthen a business (or a relationship for that matter) that is trying to please its customer.
I personally have nothing to hide and just too little time on this earth to not encourage companies and people to please me. So by all means, research and PLEASE ME!Holydoc (Home Theatre Lover)

I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
I'm just a 50 year old idiot who does not know anything about manners
or our audio industry. Hell, I never even heard a record player till I moved to the big city. We use to listen to music from a garbage can lid using a chicken claw for a needle. Yes, it seems like most folks here are civil to each other. Oh yes, I'm so paranoid about Big Brother too. No, I don't own the Tivo system and guess I never will cause I really don't want a big conglomerate spying on me and telling me what I might want to watch. I think I'm mature enough to decide that for myself. I just wanted to know if most people were aware if the fact that this was being done to them and what they thought of it. I don't claim to be a know it all and I do respect the opinions of others when offered to me in a respectful manner. I don't however think it was the case when a reply was written to me. Sorry if I offended you when I sent you a personal note you can be damn sure that want happen again as I don't think you're a very nice person either.
