My anthem pre 2l (bought from Doro recently) came with some Jan Phillips green label (i think). I allready had 2 bugle boys from the Dodd, so I got 2 more to try in the Anthem

While I was using the Jan's, my wife, on more than one occasion, complained about hearing the sound from my 2 channel in the basement too loud in the living room (one floor up, and on the other side of the house) this was never a prob before, and just figured this pre had a fuller sound that just carried through the house. hey, I didnt know.

anyway, I put the bugle boys, and noticed a softher warmer sound that I usually prefer, so I'm happy there. but, long story short. I listen at the same volume (that I allways listen too), and my wife says she can barely hear the sound in the livingroom anymore, not as much as with the Jan's. It sounds just as loud, but not a saudible in the opther rooms. is this wierd, ot normal?

anyway, love the sound overall, so why the heck do I care? just curious I guess.

You've got a bass roll off with the Amperex. The top end is great with the BB's, but the bass is sloppy, and rolled off. Maybe your room is compensating for it. I love the BB's, but I run JAN in all my 6DJ8 gear.

    Cheers,

The Cary and Anthem were night/day in my experience, as they definetly didn't like the same tubes. The Anthem excelled w/ Mullards, but with compromise, the JAN was the most well rounded I've used to date.

How do you hear something more in one room, than another, with a tube change? Just asking.

Are you using 2 tubes instead of 4 for the package? The Anthem is a mu-follower design, if I'm not mistaken, so the actual signature will most likely follow the first set. I ran quads until I found JAN tubes.

The Cary sounded best with Amperex BB/Orange, which is what I sent BD if I'm not mistaken.

We're talking two different approaches to design, in tube and in gear. That's why tube gear is a pain in the ****, yet fun at the same time. It's always refreshing.
