No bass from Sub

Not sure if this is the right forum place, but had a question. My old sub had stopped unctioning properly, so I went and bought a new one. It gave me a good excuse to justify the money lol. Anyway, I gave my old one to a friend for helping me with some things around the house. My old one, an Aiwa I had for 6 or 6 years at least before it messed up, started to not always put out bass, even when the power was on. Sometimes it would, especially after having been unplugged for a while, but usually it would not make it all the way through a movie before it would click and stop putting out bass, even though the power light was still on. I just wanted to check to see if anyone knew of a fix for this, because I feel kinda bad it is not working for him at all now. He knew it was faulty, but i did work better for im than it did me, at 1st. I just wanted to check to see if anyone knew of any causes. If there was some sort of DIY for this, I will try them. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

it sounds like a protection mode that buts in because something is going wrong or it thinks that something is going wrong.

did you know what temp the sub was when it turned off ? it sounds like it may have been a thermal protection.

it wouldent make sense for it to be shorting as its doing it by itself. during playback
