RC85i mounting/setup
I am about to purchase a new Polk speaker system:
4 RC85i for surround/rear surround
Monitor 70s for the fronts
PSW505
CSi5
I have some questions about the RC85i:
The owner's manual only shows vertical mounting. Will they sound good if mounted horizontally?
How high can they be mounted and still be effective.
My ceiling is 10 feet, so I would like to mount them very high to keep the wife happy.
Is the pre-construction bracket necessary for a good mount or is the cutout template good enough?
And finally, Does the above system match well?
Thanks,
Joseph Woodall

The RC85i, PSW505, and CSi5 are part of recommended combinations on Polk's website. The Monitor 70's didn't have any other speaker recommendations, but the RTi series is matched with your center. So maybe you would want to consider the RTi8 or RTi10 instead of the Monitor 70, they are close to the same price.
Are you going to mount the RC85i in the ceiling or in the wall? They have directional tweeters that can angle down 15 degrees, so depending on distance from the listening location, they should be able to be mounted above head level. -
Thanks for the reply.
I started reading about the tweeter problems with the Monitor 70s so I will probaly move up to the RTi series instead.
The RC85i will be mounted in the wall, probably about 8 feet.
Can they be mounted horizontally? I know it's possible, I just wanted to know if they would sound good that way.
Thanks! -
I don't see why horizontal would cause any problem. With a 14" height, they should just barely fit in between two wall studs mounted horizontally. I would just make sure the tweeters can be rotated to compensate.
