I actually think it was a legitimate suggestion since it would take care of my need for a preamp and offer me a great DAC one day. It's also somewhat price competitive considering the ASL headphone amp from AA is $270 and a preamp is going to run $300, that's $570. Then a good DAC, and I've practically paid for the DAC1.

However, that being said, I think I've found an alternative.

Thanks to everyone for your input!

Well, beings that you only asked about a headphone amp....now it's a DAC and a pre-amp, good luck with your search.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

No, I'm still just interested in a headphone amp. I'm not looking for an all-in-one unit.

Given the past few posts, I'll reiterate:
You can build Pete Millet's tube/ss hybrid headphone amp for about $150, and it's well worth it.

No pesky high voltage to kill you, either. It uses vintage automotive space charge tubes which require only 12 to 15 V on the plates. Sounds very, very good as well. The original version looks like this (I don't think PCB's for this one are still available, though).

I'll be happy to loan it to you. I should also mention that it doubles as a two-input preamp that sounds better than my Perreax SM-2. No DAC, though! :)
