Newbie HT Setup
I just purchased 4 M10s (2 for the fronts and 2 for the surrounds) and a CSM to replace my Sony HTIB. I am using a 125W Sony sub that I bought my parents a few years back. This setup is in my living room and there is serious WAF (wife acceptance factor) involved. I currently have these hooked up to a Sony STR-DE885 receiver and get OK sound with it. Would it be worthwhile replacing the Sony with something else? Any suggestions on what model?
Listening level is not too loud due to kids sleeping at night. The volume level is where people can talk to each other normally without saying "WHAT?" It is used about 25% music and the other movies and TV.
Another question is the placement of the surrounds.
Since this is in my living room, I am having a hard time placing the surrounds. One is on a sofa table in the back corner of the room pointed at the sofa (main listening spot) about 8 feet away. Height is at about ear level. The other surround is on an end table right next to the sofa. The person sitting at the end of the sofa is about 2 to 3 feet from this surround. I am out of ideas about placement of the surrounds. The wife seems to hate every spot I pick. I am about to just do away with them or put the ol' SONY HTIB surrounds back. They are about a 1/4 the size of the M10s. Any suggestions?
Thanks for any input you guys have!

i would just put the Sony htib back and sell the Polks.
and then i would re-organize everything in the kitchen and master bath.

I've got pretty much the same setup in our 14x20 family room except with the PSW10 and DE698 rcvr. Set up the M10s on wall mounts at about 8 ft. It took some experimenting to get the aiming and sub setup right. We get good sound between 55 and 85 db. Most of our listening is 60-65 db. WAF took a little while because of the size of the M10s hanging off the walls but at that height they're not as intrusive as she thought they'd be.

Are you kidding???
And don't listen to the holier than thou guys telling you to sell your stuff.
Anyways, it seems you are on a budget as I was when setting up your HT. I choose the Pioneer 815K because it has a MCACC set up where you just place the mic where you listen and let it do it's thing. Good price, good features, and even audioholics.com liked it if you want to read a review.
